OK about a month ago I described a technique of diggin that always brings nay sayers. Next weekend I plan on hitting my favorite site in Central NJ for pontil bottles. I'll bring my camera and my Gas Powered Auger. Believe your eyes ...thats right auger. I explained once that for what ever reason the bottles dont break like I know everyone is going to say. I still dont have the software to load the pictures but I have a friend that has the same camera and as quickly as I can see him I will post the pictures showing step by step how its done. I swear the bottles just pop out of the ground. No probe, no small shovels and no being careful. Just pontil bottles littering every hole we dig. I asked before if anyone wanted to dig this very old (Hundreds of years old) bottle dump with no takers. Now the offer is closed and you will be amazed at this seemingly distructive technique that literally hasnt broken one under quart sized bottle or under yet...not one. This will be the one and only demonstration so save it and amaze your friends...oh and always think out side of the box. Sincerely, Joe B

Hey Swiz, I'm counting on pics not pieces. Hope the hurricane coming up the coast doesnt delay me. The dump is on the outskirts of a three hundred year old town. Almost nothing but bottles.

So far me and a couple of friends have dug about a thousand bottle out of this dump. Nearly all pontil. Meds, sodas,on top - biters and a few poisons. I also dug two Aqua Washington Taylor flasks with tapered tops. The site is about two acres. Weve dug there for the last twenty years with seemingly no end in site.

You would miss quite a bit of tip wouldn't you ? it's bad enough digging 4x6 foot holes side by side and still missing the odd bit of tip. It certainly sounds like every bit of your tip deserves to get dug .

I use the largest two man auger I own. The site is full of bottles. The auger is my probe. I still shovel if I get into the mother load. So far not one broken bottle. My last time out a Sands pontil popped out. The lip on that one is extra thin and flat. The camera can do about anything. I just cant figure it out or I would a had a ton of photos up by now. Soon though I promise. Joe B

I know it sounds crazy.

I guess I would have to be in the nay sayer catagory. If I find a dump with whole pontil bottles I dig every inch of it carefully. Those bottles are just too rare around here to screw around with. But hey, its your dump, you can dig it with TNT if you want. Good luck.

Joe....

I'm from New Jersey and I only joined the forum a few months ago!!! I never saw your offer to join you on a bottle auger dig!!!... Anyway, I was born in Patterson and lived most of my young life in Lake Hiawatha and Parsippany!!!

Any good places along the Passaic River to dive for bottles?? I know it was kind of polluted when I was a kid in Hawthorn and Patterson. I've been wanting to go back down there just to say hello to some relatives and bottle diving would give me an excuse to return...

Wayne

Have you ever tried a 580 Case Backhoe ? They work good too but use a little more gas.

I'm not sure I believe this. If you are getting NO broken bottles, you must not be digging a dump, as we ALL know that there are broken bottles in a dump to begin with before we ever get there. I'm sure your auger would bring up some pieces of those as well, and it's not so easy to always tell which ones were broken or which you may have nicked. Maybe I'm missing something here....

Yeah, I'm in the skeptic group myself! I've done alot of dump digging over the past year and from my experiences most of the stuff in there was busted already. If it was pontiled bottles I wouldn't even want to take the chance on breaking or missing any!!! I've been on construction sites when they've used huge augers and backhoes, and yes whole bottles do pop out. But not ALL of them. For the most part alot of the whole bottles ended up in the dirt piles and I had to dig them back out by hand. Besides that, can you imagine how many dolls, marbles, pipes, buttons, and other tiny bottles that you all are missing??? If I ever found a pontiled dump I'd dig it out by hand and use a screen to sift the dirt!!! A machine wouldn't get anywhere near it!!! Chris Capley

Hey Trussin...If it's as good as you say it is thats great...but I think most of us in here think seeing is believing.....If you want credibility, show off some photos.

I am skeptical also. Sounds too good to be true and you know what they say about that! Waiting patiently for your pics.

Hey Trussin...

We're all looking forward to the photos of your auger and what it produces. It sounds like it would be a good tool for some shallow test holes and then you put a couple of guys in to dig it out completely.

Can't wait to see what you have dug...

Wayne

Dear Joe,
I am new to this page . This is the first time ever on here. I also am from central Jersey. I would appreciate a few photos of how the post hole digger works. I also have a big two man auger, and I also have a three point hitch post hole digger for the back of one of my tractors . I am a farmer and have collected and dug bottles for many years. Would be interested in any local sodas you have dug up.Thanks Kevin.
