Ok heres the deal, I am really new to all of this, but have know and wanted to do this for a long time.  I really just dont know where to start. I have done a lot of reading and googling around, but still dont understand a few things.  I live in Northern Virginia and think that this place probably has tons of good bottles. My problem is, I just dont know where to start. I dont know how to find an old pirvy or dump.  What kinds of things should i be looking for when im out walking through the woods?  Any help would be appriciated. You all seem like a very helpful bunch and i'm glad to join the forum. : )

come to think of it i know of an abandon house made in the late 1800s with an outhouse and bottle piles that would be great to dig. But how would i go about getting permission?  This place is probably going to be torn down in a few months because it is now located 5 feet from a construction site in the woods. Should i just dig it or what do you guys think.  The house has prbably been abandon for at least 100 yrs.

I'll probably get a lecture on here for saying this, but the truth is, I've been digging woods dumps for 30 years without getting permission. I'm not saying it's right or wrong here. I always ask permission for privies obviouisly ( right in the back yard ), I get permissions if I am digging near someones house, or any situation where I think the property owner would care if I were there or not. Most of my dumps are down in ravines behind old large rental houses in the centers of small older towns, and the landlord generally lives in some other town, or state, and has never been behind the house that he owns. It's often full of briars and litter and dumped modern trash. Other times I'm out in the country on large tracts of land where I cant tell if it is public or if it is private, who owns it.
I rationalize these situations in a lot of different ways, I say in my head " if the person or corporation who owns this land knew I was walking on this trail, would they care? Then I ask, if I was picking up beer and soda bottles on their land, to cash in at 5ยข each, would they care? And if they knew I was looking for 150 year old bottles out in their woods, would they care? Then if I find one worth $100 would they care? So is it a matter of finding treasure,or money or is the issue tresspassing?
Anyways, thats the sort of thought process that leads me to dig where I dig. Some of it is a rationalization on my part, but over the years I have rarely dug where I shouldn't be digging. I have probably crossed the line a couple of times. There is a big gray area when it comes to this subject as far as I'm concerned, I don't think it is black and white at all.
Good luck, I hope you find a good spot to dig!

Dump permissions are harder to get in my opinion.  Larger area, and usually harder to reclaim.  Try your county auditor.  If they don't have a website, go to the office, and they can tell you who owns it.

If its hidden in the woods, try digging first. That way you can always say no one told you not to dig. If you ask permission and get rejected, then you have no excuse and they might keep a closer eye on it knowing someone was asking about it. I only say this because you said its in the woods. When its out in the open, there's always some nosy neighbor who makes it their business to have the police on speed dial. good luck and let us know what you find.
