Hello,

I recently bought a home, and was digging in my hillside to plant some flowers. While digging, I came across an old bottle that says: "Dill's Balm of Life" on it. It's about ??6 inches tall, 2.5 inches across (that's an estimate). Anyway, i was excited, because I've seen more chards of glass that was in that little hole I dug. When I get rid of my awful cold, i'm going digging for some more!

any suggestions? any hints as to how old my medicine bottle might be?

I moved into what used to be an old feed barn. The farmhouse is next to us, and it's pretty darn old (that's an estimate too) this is quite exciting!

thanks for any tips!

amy

your bottle predates 1900. how old is your house? what area of the country do you live in? there is a good poss. that there will be more bottles to be found. try digging deeper in the spot you have found. you might be digging an old outhouse or trash pit. trash pits are usually shallow 2-4 feet. outhouses can go much deeper. if the house is older you might find bottles as old as the house. if you want to dig all the outhouses out , get back to me and i will give you some tips and try to help you locate them.

diggerjeff,

how nice of you! I would love to locate some of the old outhouses, how can i find out where they were located?

The area i found the bottle was on the side of a hillside, not too steep. It was a shallow hole, i found it about 2 feet deep in the ground. I couldn't believe it was still intact! I also found what looks like the neck of an old milk bottle, clear glass.

i live in pittsburgh, pa,

As to how old the house is, I'm not really sure, since it was once a barn. I will ask my neighbor if he knows the age of his farmhouse, that will give me a clue about my 'house'.

thanks again....

amy

Hey All, Mike in Maine here, I have been looking for my privy/outhouse(s) for a while now. Any tips would be greatly appreciated, Thanx in advance, Mike

P.S.  I was reading the comments because I have an embossed "DILL MEDICINE CO. , Norristown, PA" bottle, about 5 1/4" tall X 2" wide base, Clear-Aqua glass, which is a super small flask type bottle, it has a "Straight" or "Brandy" Lip, BIM, around 1880-1900, just as cute as can be.  Anyone have any info on this lil gem please post it, not sure if it's a keeper or not.  Thanx again, Mike in Maine

Most of the Dills bottles are pretty common (especially if you are looking in PA.).
The worm syrup is pretty uncommon comapared to the other variations.

Hi Mike, I have that same Dill bottle. I think it is a common one, but any embossed little flask-shaped bottle is cool to me. ~Jim
