dug ink filler - 1/28/2007 8:32:36 PM    marjorie040 Posts: 375 Joined: 12/3/2006 Status: offline Here's a black bottle that I dug in Charleston, SC I'm told it's an ink filler bottle....due to the "pour spout" It has a pontilled bottom but no embossing. A photo showing the bottom might help. Possibly from a New England glass house, I'll defer to the experts on that. Being pontiled I say just before up to the first year or so of the war. Bottle digging/collecting is a virus that will get you and never let you go. You will spend untold amounts of time digging, cleaning, researching, holding and admiring bottles. RE: dug ink filler - 1/29/2007 12:10:16 AM    capsoda Posts: 7917 Joined: 11/15/2005 From: Seminole,Alabama, USA Status: offline You can find many master inks on Ebay at any given time and many will look like yours BUT  there are suttle differances plus the black glass ones are not as common as other colors. they generally list from $20 and up with $20 to $35 or so being an avarge price range. Yours would probably be worth closer to tha $50 mark and if you could verify that the place it was dug was a Civil War encampment or other military post the price would double and possibly triple. That is a very nice master ink and it has what is referred to as a "Pinched" pour spout.  The color of the glass, shape and the thousands of tiny bubbles in it, suggests that it is from a New England glass house, as Guntherhess suggested earlier.  it could be an earlier Stoddard piece. I've seen them in this size and nearly identical pour spout. I would seek some input from "Earlyglass" of this forum. He is quite the collector of New England glass.  Your piece could easily fetch more than a $100.00 to the right collector.  Nice find.. Wayne (in reply to capsoda) Post #: 10

Besides my saying so, how do I verify where it was found? The whole city of Charleston was a military encampment during the civil war but I don't know about earlier, I will look into it. I got bit by the bottle bug in my early teens when my older brother began digging and would occasionally let his pesky younger sister tag along. That was 30+ years ago when you could still find places to dig fairly easily here in Massachusetts. A disability prevents me from digging now, but I can occasionally get a slight thrill when perusing flea markets or junk stores. It doesn't compare to the digging experience but it's all I've got. The history of Charleston goes all the way back to colonial times when it was Charles Town but all you have to do is reserach one small area and what/Who was there from say 1859 to 1861 or 62. See if you can find what units were in camped or using the area where you dug your bottle. I have a metal detector but don't seem to be able to use it.....it clicks alot but I've never found anything when I dig!! The Privy I was digging in in Charleston belonged to a private home....I know the owner. The house has since been sold....that's why we wanted to dig the privy before selling. We had great difficulty when we hit water....we quit them. I have since learned that we gave up too soon! We didn't find any metal at all but lots of broken china, pieces of doll faces and pipes, button etc. I don't know what to do with that stuff and I would love to go back with boots and continue digging!! The glass is very smooth and feels thin. No embossing  The seam goes up to about half way thru the neck and the number 7 is in a circle on the bottom. The bottle is very thin and has 4 or 5 bubbles. The seam goes up to but not including the neck. The bottom is pontilled. The embossing is Lynch & Clarke New York Can anyone give me an idea what was in it and perhaps how old it is?
