Someone once told me that the Empire Glass Works was located on or near the site of present Empire State Building. I don't know how true this is.

Hi wvhutch, and welcome to the forum. I hate to tell yuh, but your flask is a reproduction. The "Empire Glass Works" is a dead give-away on this flask. I'm not sure what other bottles they made, but these flasks come in a variety of nice colors that look good in the window. I'll see if the McKearin's book has any more data...I don't have it with me at work.

I have a little more info...made in Italy, in the 1970's. That's all McKearin had.

This passage is from the illustrious Digger O'Dells site:

Although reproductions (called "repro" for short) have become collectible themselves, no one wants to pay the price for an original and receive a repro. You can help arm yourself against accidently buying a repro by educating yourself.

An excellent source of info for identifying reproductions bottles is part IX on page 678 of McKearin's "American Bottles & Flasks and Their Ancestry".

In general, any bottle marked (typically on the base) with:

WHEATON
MADE IN TAIWAN
MADE IN JAPAN
CROWNFORD CHINA
EMPIRE GLASS WORKS
CLEVENGER BROTHERS GLASS WORKS
OLD STURBRIDGE VILLAGE
is a reproduction bottle.
