my father in law has about 300 a aches why out in the woods and he told me about an old home site on it. I used a metal dectector and found lots of old tools and farm tools and square headed nails. I found two bottles tree roots had grown around. There is a mound that could be a trash heap. I will try and probe it but I know there must be a privy there some where. How do I look for it? Way back on the creek there use to be a and old town. I have found the road to it but what do I look for to find the town? I understand there was also an old post office there to and a store! I have talked to people that live in the area and they know it was once there but don't know excately where. Any tips anyone? Greatly appreciated! Barbara

Hi I used to use a metal detector in the woods for old logging dumps. I learned just a couple of things that may help you. I learned once when going thru an area that I never thought anything about. I just had the dector on the ground just in case and I got a hit, dug down and would you believe a metal file on top of a old wiskey. The whiskey had a hole in it. Well I did and you ahould stand back of the area and look at the trees, you should note the smaller ones as the once cleared of area(Your town). Then I look at the type of trees growing there, should they be there in a wooded area or did man plant them. This might help, you should not see grass in woods, but I spotted one area where quack grass was growing and with other evidence (A Heavy metal anchor) this was the area the animals were stored. Also found and mapped the logging railroad with the detector, they took the rails but left the spikes. Anything that just does not belong in the woods. Good luck
