Dont throw one of these over your left shoulder like I did many moons ago while I dug newer dump. - http://cgi.ebay.com/Ex-Rare-White-House-Vinegar-Bubble-Jug-Half-Gallon_W0QQitemZ260269289737QQihZ016QQcategoryZ369QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I would have never guessed until I have seen it for myself.
I can remember the sound it made as it hit the rock I chucked it at and a smile was placed on my face. I can tell you know, there aint no smile.

Trying not to be snob, but doesn't almost everything made via ABM look like crap? Why anyone would want to display such a butt-ugly bottle I cannot fathom.  I think a French's mustard jar has more appeal than that thing.

I used to chuck all White House and other vinegar cruets/jugs, but lately I have began lugging them back to my cull shed where they intermingle with the heaps of 1858s/E-Z Seals/Bromos/crock jugs/slicks & other relunctant keepers.  I would gladly trade my lot of White Houses for a single squatty...  Don't guess I have any takers?

E is right. That is a butt ugly bottle. All of them are. Whenever i dig or see those in a junkyard, i just dont give it any attention. Maybe i should save them from now on.

I am with most of yall! That bottle has no apeal at all. MAN,WHAT A GREAT BOTTLE I COULD BUY IF I HAD THE MONEY PAID FOR THAT PIECE OF JUNK! I remember not long ago the white house jugs with the embossed white house on them kept becoming more and more expensive. The price of these have fallen a bit ,because machine made bottles were made by the zillions so there is no end in sight for supply and they are not old enough to be that hard to find in a 20s-40s dump. on the other hand handmade bottles were never made in the quanities of the machine made bottles and after 100 years+ many have been broken, stained, etc. THE machine made bottles have no charactor ,they are all uniform, hard to find any two handmade bottles exactly alike and WOW AT THE COLORS! A CLEAR MACHINE MADE BOTTLE  WELL NEVER BE CALLED A BEAUTIFUL WINDOW BOTTLE!!!!

I'd been hesitant to make any comments about these posts, but as some of you have continued in the same "train of thought" with later posts, & I can't remain silent any longer.
It may have been unintentional - but - I believe you fellows just slighted a large segment of the Hobby's collecting community...ie:... milks, slug plate, deco, & ACL sodas, fruit jars, peanut butter, & other product jars, ( even White House), pre-Pro and later beers &  whiskeys, candy containers, etc. Like beauty, value and collectibility , is in the eye of the collector and,  if pursuing a goal of collecting all known variations of a particular "brand" of bottle, even the most unappealing bottle has its own special niche.BTW...that White House jug ( and others), may not be so scarce if previous diggers hadn't so inconsiderately tossed/broken so many with a smile. One must leave something for those that come later in the Hobby , when possibly many BIM bottles will no longer be available,  or dug in any quantity. Like oil, one day the supply will run out.If everyone collected BIM bottles only, you'd have high demand amid high prices , and today's members of the Hobby would be reduced by about 1/3 or more. You need to also consider what is available to collect in certain geographic regions. People tend to collect what they can dig or easily find at shops, flea markets, etc....not all of us are in a region where we can dig BIM bottles so readily as in the larger towns of the north.  I've dug two pontilled bottles in my 30+ years of collecting.  I'm proud of them even though they are plain and of  little monetary value. The BIM smooth base bottles I have dug have been for the most part common as well, but I still cling to many of them. Goodness knows when I'll ever dig any others around my area....but I'm always looking.A clear BIM bottle will never have any window appeal either. Bottles turning amethyst would be an exception. My point being: To say ABM bottles/jars have no character is an erroneous statement as well as a broad one. Also calling them junk is a misnomer...JMHO. Catchya later......

I agree with you Whiskeyman, there are alot of collectible bottles from that era.I dig newer stuff alot,I just personally don't like MOST of it, so you won't hear me talking much about it.I collect a local druggist who has some great patent meds, bitters, etc. and I try to collect every bottle he put his name on.Some are clear TOC druggists with no eye appeal at all,but I love find a new one.I would never insult someone else for collecting what they enjoy.I hear people complaining about how auction sites only sell "high dollar" bottles and that is their opinion.Or people using the term "pontil snob".That is someone elses opinion I like what I like and will voice my opinion. It is a great thing we don't all collect the same thing and I enjoy seeing good collections of milks, food jars,etc..ACL's are even starting to grow on me,but I don't want to see them where I am digging. As far as supply of bottles from the 20's-40's,that will never end, exept for painted labels in good condition. There are deep landfills everywhere full of bottles from that era. Most diggers have ignored them, not thrown the good ones away.I would dig them but only with a backhoe and keep an eye out for milks, pottery, etc. as the buckets were dumped. To each his own.

OK,

I see your point, and I am sorry if I slighted anyone - probably should have just left it at that particular vinegar jug being FUGLY.  My wife loves White House/Apple Pie Ridge and other cruets as well as ACL milk bottles, truth is they are displayed more prominently in my house than my collection of older glass is.

Also should point out that most of my friends do not, as they put it:  "get the bottle thing" - to them even my pontiled glass is garbage, and anyone (including me) who would devote time to such a hobby is a bit off (OK, I suppose I am a bit off).

Again, I do apologize if I offended anyone - I don't want to become the new "Bottles33" on this forum, E.

Hey, E and Whiskeyman, I understand both of your points. I think when you are digging for pontils, and you are deep in a pit and finally hit your first piece of glass, and it's a clear screw top, you tend to develop a hatred for new stuff, just because it's not what you have been breaking your back for. It's hard to not blurt out something that sounds snobby.
I would NEVER have thought for a second that the White House bottle was worth more than a dollar ( unless I saw White House embossed, then I might have paid $10 just to take a chance and sell it on Ebay). But I've been working harder to learn more about the milks, the ACLs. the Ball jars, and many other newer catagories, and I've made some good Ebay money that I've been able to buy early bottles with for my collection. After all these years, and still so much more to learn, it's hard to believe !
Thanks for posting that Ebay post. I'll definately have my eyes open for one of those!

E,

I have the same problem with my co workers.  They think collecting and searching for bottles is crazy and a complete waste of time.  I have only been collecting bottles for a couple of years and bring a lot of  passovers(cracked, broken, etc) back from a dig to learn as much as I can about the companies that produced the bottles.  Looking up the history of the companies that produced these bottles is as much fun as the finding them.
