Hi I`m new,I found a dumpsite, there are a ton of old bottles there and old pitchforks ,is there a certain type of bottle to look for? There are so many bottles, but I don`t want to haul out ones that are worthless.Any suggestions would be appriciated thanks I found this glass thing that might be an oil lamp,it is real fancy and in really nice shape,I will see if I can get a picture of it in a few days,I don`t have a digital camera but I have a friend that does.

Welcome strawbfan Cool that you found a dump with so many bottles first look for bottles that have cork tops, except for pop bottles, there are many old soda bottles that you will want to keep, color would be the next thing, colbalt blue, amber's, green, ect..embosing on the bottles is good too...this will get you started..as you said with the oil lamp, pics are the best..there are many here who can help you, and we just like to look at pics of bottles as well I am looking forward to your posts to keep us informed...good luck with the dig!

Hi Susanne, thanks for the information, there are so many bottles up there and I didn`t have a clue what to look for.I found quite a few that probably had corks in them at one time, the tops have no screw grooves but are like rolled. So far any of the soda bottles I have found have been broken.I found an amber colored whisky bottle yesterday ,it was in great shape. There are bottles everywhere I dig ,there are alot of bottles right on top of the ground,it is on a hillside, and the rain probably exposed them over time.I might go back up there today or tomorrow to dig some more.

Howdy Strawbfan, Look for embossing. This may help with dating your bottles also. No Seams on bottle: bottle may be hand blown, probably has a very uneven shape and is probably a pre-1860 item.
Or bottle may present an even shape, but was spun in a mold to smooth out the seams. Then bottle is dated 1900's->1920.

Blown In Mold: The seams run from bottom and end a little below the top. The bottle lip may be crude and was applied by hand. The bottle is dated 1860's - early 1900's.

3 piece mold: Bottom part of bottle (from bottom to shoulder) there are no seams - then there's a seam near shoulder that runs around the bottle. From this shoulder seam are two seams that go up the neck and stop below the top of the lip. This was used from 1840-1870. As with 'Blown in Mold' the lip has a crude look and was applied by hand.

Automatic Bottle Machine: The seams run to the top of the bottle, then the bottle is ABM {made by automatic bottle machine} These bottles started around 1904, and by 1920's almost all bottles were made by this process. Most are not collectable yet. There are exceptions

If bottle is embossed "Federal Law Prohibits ...", then your bottle is dated between 1933 (end of prohibition period) and 1970.

Diginit, thanks for the information,so far most of the bottles appear to be old ,but not real old, probably 1950`s ,but I haven`t dug very deep ,so there may be some that are alot older. Are the old brown Clorox bottles with the small mouths worth anything?I have found 2 or 3 of them in great condition.found a short fat glass container today,it is white and says Toni Creme shampoo with lanolin. Also a few small brownish bottles with eye droppers in them.I found this spoon and letter opener today, the spoon is a Charley Mcccarthy spoon I could scan them because of their size ,I need a digital camera for the bigger stuff.I will put the letter opener pic in the next post
