Nice bottle there I am not an expert on those but I think it may be a case gin. What does the embossing say?

It looks like a Vandenberg applied seal but I can't quite see it.. These are sometimes called pig snouts. While in general sealed cases are worth more and the lip finish is also more desireable this one is fairly common. Has it got a nice pontil?

The last price Kovels' (2002) put on a Van Den Burgh & Co case gin at 11 inches was $66...

Hi ,
Eric is correct , that is a Vandenburgh sealed case gin . These used to sell for around a 100.00 at one time. Then quite a few surfaced , and they seem to sell in the 35.00 - 55.00 range now ( for the larger variant). The smaller ones still bring arond 65.00 - 75.00 .
I don't believe a pontil example exsists ..... I have never seen or heard of one .
Well anyway , Nice Gin !

Please have a look at the bottom of the gin jarand let me know if it is unusual. It looks different from the other gin bottles I have been researching, thanks Kyle

Hi again ,
It must be a mold imperfection of somekind .... I have a Vandenburgh with a smooth base , and one with a diamond shape embossed on the bottom. I don't believe yours is pontiled ..... I have never seen or ever heard of a pontiled example !
Nice Sealed Case Gin !

Is it smooth , or does it look like a pontil rod was snapped off ( jagged , sharp, and rough ) ?

the bottom looks like it has a small pontil. It is not flat but indented. That is why I thought it was unusual. It does't look like any of the other gin jar bottoms I have seen.

Nope, Not a pontil. Case gins were held by the blow pipe on the other end and were shaped with paddles and later in open top molds.

thanks for the info, the bottom looked different than the others I saw, so I was curious as to what had caused the indented bottom. Kyle

Nope, Didn't mean to. I've had a few pontiled ones. The ones from the era his was made. They were cooled enough to handle, then the top was reheated and rolled.

did a little research and several sites are showing pontilled case gin bottles. I am not sure of the difference between an open pontil and regular  pontil, but they all seem to look different on the gin bottles I have seen. Ebay also has a few for bid at the moment, so any experts out there please confirm or deny, thanks Kyle
