got two new ones in the mail today. - 9/7/2011 5:18:17 PM    the ham man   Posts: 516 Joined: 11/14/2009 From: Ellicott City, MD Status: offline Soccer practice was canceled today because of the rain and when I got home I had a nice big package on my door step.  Opened it up and found this beaut. A Christian Eckert from Ellicott City, and a really nice one too.  It's a great one for my Ellicott City collection.  Got on the forum and then hear the door closing. My mom says as she walks in, " there's a package for you!"  Opened it up and found a 1/4 pint fairfield dairy. I already have the 1/2 pint and needed the 1/4 pint so this was a nice addition. Here are the pics. Enjoy, I know I did. The blob is what is called a "steamer". They were pretty popular in Md and some of the surrounding states but weren't used anywhere else really.  I'm sure most of you have read posts by Waskey. He's a big steamer collector and has posted about the origin of this style of bottle many times before.  I think steamers where made in the 1880's up to the 1900's. That Eckert is odd, the blob on the top doesn't look at all correct on the bottle. As Connor and others said, it looks like it should have a Balt. loop seal due to the shape. The bottle is shaped like a typical steamer circulated 1895-1905 which would usually have a loop seal. Very odd it has a blob. Love the milk. _____________________________ Looking to purchase any bottles from Ellicott City, Maryland that I don't have!! Also milks from these following MD towns:Woodlawn, Catonsville, Elkridge. The 1/4 pint milks are known as "gills" & usually held cream. They were "officially" phased out in 1927, but were still produced for a couple more years. (in reply to waskey) Post #: 13
