glad to have found such an interestting site. have been collecting bottles for about 12 ears. this one is one of my treasures. hubby found it diving on the west coast of canada. it is not a glass bottle but rather seems to be pottery or stoneware it is very heavy and stands just under 1o inches tall. it is very wide. any ideas of what it is ? any ideas on how to clean the old crustaceans off it. there is a stamp in the bottom side of bottle but it is too indistinct to read. more curious than anythig.

I have a bottle found diving at Pearl Harbor, it was encrusted with coral. I soaked it in CLR and it cleaned up as good a new. there was no paint or labels on my bottle so I didn' t have to worry about that.

cant tell from the picture to well but it appers to have a pinch in the lip on the right side of your photo. if it does have a pinch for pouring and is stoneware it could be a master ink for refilling ink wells. doc is right clr shouldnt hurt this peice . since the crustation is calcium based it should clean up well pick off what you can and check often dont over soak it and ckeck clr on bottom first.flush well with clean water after cleaning. i have a few master inks that resemble your photo. it could be something else , clean it and look for imbossing which would be pressed in. re- photo and let us see it again .i want to see the lip.it looks like it is shaped for pouring. nice find.the water must be cold up there.

I am absolutely certain that this is a stoneware master ink (or bulk ink as we call them in the UK). Over here we do not get potters stamps on the base, but usually on the side just up from the base. There are various finishes used, normally saltglaze (which probably is an early version), a brown or reddish brown glaze and (a little more unusual) in a white glazed finish.

Unfortunately these are almost impossible to date as they were used from around 1870 until well into the 1920s. I have even had an occasional one from a local 1930s tip I sometimes dig. They can be picked up over here from £1-5, but the sense of achievement of having found this diving cannot be calculated in cash terms.

Yes, looks like a stoneware master ink to me, also.
Definitely.

tis indeed a master ink the best way to remove coral is to put the bottle in diluted hydrochloric acid (one part acid five parts water) . be carefull with the acid and never use it on printed stonewear of any sort or it may turn plain .
