I am absolutely certain that this is a stoneware master ink (or bulk ink as we call them in the UK). Over here we do not get potters stamps on the base, but usually on the side just up from the base. There are various finishes used, normally saltglaze (which probably is an early version), a brown or reddish brown glaze and (a little more unusual) in a white glazed finish. Unfortunately these are almost impossible to date as they were used from around 1870 until well into the 1920s. I have even had an occasional one from a local 1930s tip I sometimes dig. They can be picked up over here from £1-5, but the sense of achievement of having found this diving cannot be calculated in cash terms. Cheers - John Woodhams www.oldbottleman.co.uk
