I'm afraid I don't know much about Austrailia, though here in the states I would recommend that you start with trash dumps (land fills) first. If you happen to live near water that would help increase your chances dramatically. What I mean is, it seems that trash was often buried near-by water. I suppose it was much easier to dig the muddy earth here by hand, and more often than not, trash was burned so I can imagine the water provided a means of keeping the fire from spreading. If you make your way down around the out-skirts of an old town or, behind some old houses that border along a creek or inlet type waterway at low tide, you should have some success with your poker. Or perhaps even spot pieces of glass here and there. Dump digging seems to be pretty popular there in AU. And it sure beats the hassle of trying to obtain permission to dig private property. Good luck mate, I hope that this was of some help.

there seem to be a few Aussie diggers on the u.k. forum, posted below.  Its hard to say how to find bottles...  I know the gold fields are or where a major spot for you guys, but I imagines its the same as here in some ways, you gotta find dumps on old homesteads or in towns...  look in areas that people could use for building or farming like ravines, gullies, washes, and water...  try the guys on the u.k. forum, you might have some luck fund Aussie differs over there...
