My friend dug this one today. It is base embossed " AM INSr ( reverse N) PATd SEPT 13, 1881" In my book it looks like a 134, which is common $10-20, but it also looks like a 160.7 which is rarer. The height is just under 3 3/4" tall, which doesn't exactly match either. It looks really early. It is aqua and needs to be cleaned up. Any experts out there?

He also got a 1923 Hobbleskirt coke from Portsmouth NH, which I think is a rare one.

oh my.....

well...

see for yourself......

I think that is a 160.7..wow

given, the one that is shown on that page is really rare green, but your desrciption of the base is pretty much verbatim, so I would say yes yes and yes!

thats a 134, a cd-160.7 will have an inner skirt, a taller dome, and a much more narrow profile.  10-20 is common i suppose, but  not bad for smthing you found.  I'll probably look for years ad years and not find one of those.  Good find!

I want to believe Bike goon, his answer is better! :) If it is a 134, it's kind of disappointing I guess, cause I saw the base embossing, and then the design looked really early. I've never seen one up here, maybe they aren't from around Maine. Thanks for your help! Maybe I'll dig an amber one tomorrow!

i think there is a picture of an amber one on the crown jewels website, not sure.  I have one just like yours but my 134 is an Oakmen from around 1896-97 while yours is from around 1884 or so.  The one i have is a no-name oakmen with a <> on the dome, made after the American insulator company went out of busines.  The one i have was bought at a show, i need an american still.   maybe  anice lt. green one...
Those insulators were common to find about 30 years ago, but now they are very hard to find as collectors have grabed nearly all of them and the only way to get them is at shows and such.  They can still be found in some parts of the New England region, like new york and main but here in ohio, i dont think so.  Actually, i ont think theres any kind of american insulator here to be found.  Hemingrays and brookfields...  It's  a regional thing.  On my last trip to the region (southern NY) we didnt find any americans though, but there is someone in new york who has dug quite a few (and american 145's and 160.7's) along an old rail line.  Next summer i hope to find atleast one american insulator if i can make it to orthern new york.
here should be mor einsulators where that one came form, keep looking.

Thanks for the info Brains, you know your insulators. My friend is finding these in a river near here. He has found about 30 insulators, almost all are common, but they are older, so it's exciting to see what he'll pull up next, maybe an odd color. He got a cd 149 yesterday, in addition to the two 134s.

What do you all consider the best website and/or book for identifying insulators? I found a less than perfect one recently along an old railroad grade, but can't ID it doing a Google search. I don't have a digital camera, or else I'd post a pic. Perhaps I can borrow one. Thanks.

Thanks, Brains. It sort of looks like the 126.1. I wish the sites would give more of a year span when each insulator was produced. I'll have to bring it into work and take a few pics of it and post them.
