Not so sure bout a dishwasher. They get pretty hot. I usually leave tehm soak in clr or if you dont have any use warm soapy water and then scrub with an old toothbrush.

i wouldnt think the dishwasher would hurt them at all, lets face it glasses are way more fragile than bottles and they survive the dishwasher

Anna milk glasses aren't 150 yeaqrs old. While you can wash them in there I've heard horror stories on the forum about this practice. Like anything use at your own risk.

Lobey.

good question...  funny but about 6 months ago I had a woman call me to come see her bottle collection in the interest of a sale.  She has had the bottles for 20 years as they had belonged to her mother.  She had some very nice ones and they all were displayed on top of her kitchen cabinets, which is a very dusty and hard to clean spot.  To remedy the situation she told me that she took them down every 6 months or so and ran then through the dishwasher!  She had been doing it 10 odd years.  And never lost a bottle.  I wouldn't recommend it but if the bottles are thick glass you should be alright...

another idea is mentadent.  Put the bottles in a 5 gallon bucket and fill it with water so the bottle are submerged, then throw in a whole pack of mentadent (denture cleaner) it comes in tablets.  Wait 3 days or so and then proceed with a tooth brush.  Most rust or anything else comes right off with ease...

The rule for dishwashers is its OK to put any bottles you dont like in them.

I'll agree with Matt and others.  I'd say no to a dishwasher due to the high temperature.  I still lose bottles due to those almost invisible fractures that are hardly noticeble until you wash.  Even washing by hand, sometimes the smallest temperature change will send these fractures running everywhere. I try to use water that has reached ambient temperature on dug bottles. These are bottles that have been exposed to extreme conditions and are not your everyday glassware. I'm sure other collectors have had similar experiences with bottles that go "ping" during the washing or drying.
