D.V.S. or V.S. indicates [Doctor] of Veterinary Science. Currently would be D.V.M. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

Probably for Veterinary Surgeon. The veterinary community was still getting established at the turn of the century and trying to figure out what to call themselves. Even today the University of Penn awards a VMD instead of DVM. If this guy graduated from a British school he would have used V.S.
That is a terrible bottle and I would be happy to get rid of it for you.

Here is some information I found on this guy:
“As a farmer and veterinary surgeon, probably no man in Morrison county has achieved a more pronounced success than Dr. J. H. Newman of Little Falls. He is not only a farmer of large holding in this county but he is also a veterinary surgeon and enjoys an extensive practice. Because of the success he has achieved, he has gained for himself a reputation which extends far beyond the border of his own locality. Good judgement, keen discrimination, good common sense, and adequate preparation have entered into his makeup and are responsible for his success.
J.H. Newman is a native of Pierz, Minnesota, born on November 24, 1877. He is the on of PH and Gertude (Dippen) Newman, the former of whom was born at Madison, Wisonsin, as was the latter also. Both were educated at Madison and lived with their parents until their marriage. Mr. and Mrs Newman can to Morrison county shortly after their marriage …”
It goes on to talk about them homesteading and then getting into the livery business. Apparently business was good and he invested in land , owning about 800 acres at one point. They had lots of children, many who died young. Two of the surviving children became vets and one a human doctor.
J.H. worked in the livery business for his dad and became a partner in 1890. He entered the Chicago Veterinary College for one term in 1896 . He left the college then returned to the business. In 1901 he re-entered the college and graduated in 1903. He practiced in ST. Cloud, Minn. For one year and then opened his office in Little Falls (1904) in his fathers old sales stable.
The article goes on to say he was a an extensive land owner with over 1000 acres, large herds of cattle, hogs, sheep and many fine horses. He also owned city property and an automobile that he used to visit farms. He was a Republican and alderman, member of the Elks Lodge.

I got this from this link:
