jenny lind fislerville repo or not - 1/29/2007 8:58:14 PM    sewellbottleman Posts: 295 Joined: 1/29/2007 From: Mantua Township/Sewell section Status: offline I was wondering if you could possibly clear  something up for me.I have been collecting bottles since I was 12 years old.I grew up and still live in Gloucester county in New Jersey.The Jenny Lind Fislerville bottle and the Jenny Lind Glassboro(Whitney Glass Works bottles were produced 5 to 10 miles from my current address.I have the chance to purchase both of these bottles from a reputable antiques dealer.The Glassboro factory  bottle Im confident is original I am not aware of any Clevenger or other remakes of it.The Fislerville on the other hand I,ve heard various opinions on.Neck to long,funny looking mouth ect.One such opinion was offered by a Supposed Clevenger expert.I was looking at different auctions on ebay recently when i ran across one for a Jenny Lind Fislerville bottle.This gentleman offered this advice to the seller:Good evening. Thought you should know you have a reproduction bottle made by the Clevenger Brothers Glass Company of Clayton, NJ, circa 1935-1942. Easy method of identification - on reverse of bottle find the group of barrels to the far right below the factory building. If there are five barrels in the group, it's an original 1850 bottle. Four barrels and it's a Czech repro. Three barrels and it's one of two different bottles made by Clevengers. RE: jenny lind fislerville repo or not - 1/30/2007 1:21:11 PM    kungfufighter   Posts: 145 Joined: 2/18/2005 Status: offline Good afternoon Steve.  Tom is, as the saying goes, "the man" on this topic and there is little I can add to the information he provided other than noting that the reproductions have a straight "stovepipe" style neck while the originals taper gracefully from the shoulder to the mouth.  The Glassboro bottles have not been reproduced.  If you were to post a picture of the bottle I would happily give you my opinion.  Having been fooled by a repro long ago I hope I won't ever make that mistake again:) (in reply to sewellbottleman) Post #: 2

There are several other more subtle differences:1> The fake holds exactly one quart , whereas the original holds one quart and one eighth.2> There is a variation in the lettering , fake vs original3> The bust is more broad: measuring 4.6 mm on a fake vs 4.2 mm on the original4> The chin is more pointed5> The bertha is more narrow6> The lower door and windows are larger7> The barrels and kegs are entirely different8> The flourishes beneath are missing entirely The fakes were first made in an aquamarine...years later amethyst, blue, emerald green and amberina appeared. Source: American Bottles & Flasks & Their Ancestry/ McKearin-Wilson Additionally, I recall something about the smoke.On the fakes it is blowing more to the direct "left". When I was a resident of hawaii from the 1960's to the 1980's I was a bottle digger and collector. i have not been involved for years but still have some bottles left in my collection. Mostly whiskeys, gins, and sodas. The main reason for this message is that i acquired a Jenny Lind Fislerville glassworks back there over thirty years ago. i am sure it is a reproduction after reading the latest from the forum. Thanks for the information. My bottle seems to have 3 regular size barrels from left to right with one more smaller one between the second and third barrell. What value does the repro have? Anyone? RE: jenny lind fislerville repo or not - 1/31/2007 6:32:02 PM    trussin   Posts: 156 Joined: 5/5/2005 Status: offline Looks real to me.  Im holding mine up to the screen.  I live in Williamstown,NJ.  I bought mine from GWA.  All of the best ways to spot repros are listed above.  I think the best way to look at the barrels was described best as being different.  Im about to dump all but the bottles blown in the area.  Good luck with your original Fislerville.  Oh the smoke curls up in a wide plumb.  JB in nj (in reply to Archking45) Post #: 8
