Here are some photos of a privy dig I did back in late May. We went to the site and the location where the privy was marked on the Sanborn was now under a stone parking lot. I measured off where I expected the privy to be and I started whacking away with the pickaxe. I tried to probe but it was really hard about a foot under the stone. I got out the pickaxe again and pounded through a layer of concrete, probably the floor of a former garage. Under that it was pretty soft and felt crunchy down deep. We started digging and picking but whatever it was wasn't a privy. My friend Gary showed up and we started probing, without much luck as most of the area was now stone. I then probed near the house outside a back door and sank the probe. It was real rocky but seemed like a privy. Once we got down a ways we found a couble of TOC bottles but not much trash. About 3 feet down I saw the base of an amber, oval bottle, a Warners? No, it was a Federal Law Prohibits flask with a screw top. Then another! Not a good sign. We kept digging down finding the back wall (stone liner) and found a few marbles, one a cracked pontiled swirl that would have been very nice if mint.  We kept going down since it was obviosly a privy and we hadn't hit bottom yet. Mark had to leave with a migraine and 5 minute later I found a side and base to a very ornate op. Cath,. pickle. Next I found the body of a hinge mold large size Dr Foords Pectoral Syrup (from Cazenovia). There was a layer towards the house that was all glass and pottery about 12" thick. There was a lot of broken window glass and  tumblers and goblets as well as ironstone with a few decoated pottery pices mixed in. Whole we got a great teal whiskey 5th, a small Dr Foords Pectoral Syrup, op. Dr Inghams Nervine, 2 aqua umbrellas (one pontiled) milk glass Hagans Magnolia Balm, Dr Boshees German Syrup, Dr Sawens Cough Syrup, a JEIM turtle and a round Staffords ink, honey amber Mrs Allens., a Dr Tafts White Pine Cough Extract Auburn NY, a cool dolls head and a little dolls leg and a great painted china marble. Criers were few, a couple of black glass whiskeys or ales, an olive Qt.  DA Knowlton Saratoga, and a Crowleytown Mason and a Kline jar.  I brought home 3 buckets of shards to try to reconstruct, I saved all the pottery I could although most of it is plain and will be trashed. It rained on and off most of the afternoon, but we erected a tarp to help stay dry. How do you add multiple pictures?
