my freinds and i have good luck in mi locating trash pits with metal detectors..we dont own a probe........we go to virginia alot..and are wondering what is the best way to locate civil war trash pits....we have dug out a few hut sites and got very little...we are having difficulty locating were the main trash sites would be located for the camps...in michigan..we listen for reject signals of iron to pinpoint locations....any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like you need to read the 3 pages in my book, "The Collector's Guide to Civil War Period Bottles and Jars -- With Prices, THIRD Edition.

If you're hitting the sites in Virginia, that's where I'm from until a year ago. Centreville and Fairfax Station were especially good to us. Virginia is still the hottest place to dig for Civil War period pieces!
