hi i just got a bottle from a "very" small time dealer here in nj. it is dark purple and reads j. clapham botanical chemist wade ln & kelsalls leeds .it is really crude with bubbles and bent neck. by question is the color,it made me think as soon as i saw it .it is stunning but the dark purple made me think it could of been messed with.the thing is this guy might of had maybe 10 or so bottles at his shop.all pretty much local dug bottles so i would think he might not be into making bottles purple.so first have you guys and girls ever heard of this bottle and do some bottle really come in a dark purple almost black color.i will have pic up soon thanks again ,matt http://s84.photobucket.com/albums/k38/mattmichelle/?action=view&current=IM000660.jpg

   Matt,

I think that is the color glass that bottle was blown in.That is not a color achieved through irradiation or a light box.I hate to admit how I know but I do.Not many American bottles were blown in that color with the exception of hair bottles but I have seen a good number of European bottles in those colors. It is a beautiful bottle,English in orgin, and 100% original.Great find,Doug

The seam on mine goes straight on up through the lip, and also circles all the way around below the lip. Mine doesn't have any bubbles to speak of, but it has a crude fold in the glass that messes up some of the embossing. The bottom edge all the way around is pretty sharp.

Here's some info from Digger... Not exactly definitive, but...

Hey Digger your sight is really informative and interesting. I've been a bottle collector for about 5 years now and have a collection of around 200 bottles (small by comparison to some I know). What I was wondering was if a bottle I got this weekend was a reproduction or not. I paid $ 8.00 (US) for it but what got me suspicious about it being a repro was 1) its a really nice deep purple colour and 2) I found some reproductions on the net in clear. The bottle is about 6 1/2" tall and is dark purple (like I said) Its embossed "J CLAPHAM BOTANICAL CHEMIST WADE L & KELSAILS LEEDS" the base is smooth with no markings. The lip is flared with a seem that comes up to and onto but not over the lip. If you could tell me if it is a reproduction or not was this bottle ever really produced and how much it is worth it would be a great help thanks Jon (Ottawa Ontario Canada) I do not have the sources to check this old English bottle.  But I would guess that it would be authentic.  What might not be authentic is the deep color there have been many irradiated bottles sold in the last 4-6 years.  Either way for $8 if you like it keep it.  You bought it because it appealed to you so enjoy it and stop worrying.  Digger Send your Bottle Questions to:  Digger Odell

Ron

I know just what you mean, Richard... Naturally, this one was at the very bottom... I really hate those pages where you scroll thru and finally find the question... But Digger quit answering... ARRGGGHHH!!!!!!!!

If you use google toolbar try the word search function or use the find in your browser. I stopped scrolling a long time ago.

Matt,

If there are other reproductions out there of this bottle,I would say it is a good chance yours could be one as well.Again,in regards to color. It has not been irradiated to get this color. This I am certain of.Doug

Interesting bottle...
From the looks of it it would appear to be an antique bottle.
Even the color is in line with some hair bottles of the period.
There are examples of old molds being reused to blow bottles.
I would assume it to be authentic until proven otherwise although it is suspect at this point. It appears to at least be based on a real product. More research is needed.

A botanical chemist was someone who produced medicines from plant extracts.

Pretty cool label...

There appears to be a J Clapham bottle included in a collection of medical bottles at the New York University School of Medicine... Scroll down to Box 19...
