Since its basically the same wavelength of radiation is causing the reaction I dont see how you could possibly tell sun colored glass from UV lamp colored glass other than making the assumption that very darkly colored glass couldnt have received enough exposure over the life of the bottle to turn them that dark.  But on a lightly tinted bottle I see no way you could possibly tell the difference.
I understand the dislike people have for modified glass but I see a dilema for them...since there is no way to tell if light to moderate purple glass has been naturally or UV lamp colored,  do you just not buy any purple bottles unless you see them dug? Or do you just assume all the dark ones are artificial and accept the lighter UV tinted ones?

mikmis - apparently aqua bottles will turn purple. I have not done it (nor do I see a reason to) but people in this forum have done it who I believe. It seems plausible to me since there are likely aqua glass bottles with a certain amount of manganese in them. It seems to be a pretty fine balance between the iron and manganese and the coloring aqua, clear , and amethyst. But I'm not a chemist.

I dont buy purple glass at all. and you can tell the difference. There's a certain un-uniformity about a piece of glass thats turned naturally. Whether it turned half buried in mud or sitting on your windowsill it's never quite the same color from lip to base. quite the contrary to one thats been changed in a light box.

thanks matt ,the reason why i asked is because im trying to get color variations down better and i've noticed that some of the other colors like cobolt and amber can have an amethyst tint to it .is that possible or are my eyes just buggy ?

     Lobey,

Some light naturally colored ones are nice, but personally I would take a clear druggist or hutch over a purple one.I wouldn't put a nuked local in my collection but some people like them. And if it is a plentiful bottle, fine. It sucks when you see a rare one colored, though. But to each his own I guess.

I have seen dark cobalt bottles that have an amethyst tint to them. People dont normally seem to note that in descriptions. Amber bottles can have a reddish or amethyst tint which is noted as puce and is desirable.

Note that some bottles were purposely made in deep amethyst, such as Mrs Allens Hair bottles. They did that by adding excess manganese (or nickel) to the aqua glass batch.
Bill's site has some good info on glass colors...

great topic i was wondering will any uv light work with this method. Or does it have to be certain ones. I see nothing wrong with turning the common  bottles that you are going to chunck anyway why not make a dollar off the work you have done looking for them. Just my thought though.

You can only use germicidal UV lights, used in the medical and HVAC professions.  There are ways to tell if glass has been irradiated, besdies looking at it.  There are no ways to tell the difference between natural SCA and a light box SCA.  Every piece reacts different, and everyone who does it has a chance to pull them when they want.  Aqua will turn, but I don't think it will work in a box, only radiation.

Aqua glass can turn amethyst under exposure to UV light if its chemical composition is right.

Nuke em!

What bothers me is when I find a very rare medicine or fruit jar that hasbeen irradiated dark purple. If it were in its original shape it would have been an addition to a collection. Now it is in purple obscurity and not as valuable as if it were left alone. People do it because they wish to sell the pretty purple bottle. I refuse to buy them. Unfortunately, I have let some good bottles go because of my apparent hang up over it.

There is one place I visit that has a shelf with nothing but irradiated bottles. Boy, I wish I could find some of the bottles he/she has irradiated.

Gunth, I agree with the how much is enough (?) purple issue. I think this larkinis the first bottle I ever dug. It was starting to turn the prettiest amythest within the first year in my window. I loved the color. Her it is 20 years later. I pulled it from the window and it is in the dark now. I just don't find it ass appealing as the original SCA we so like.

Would a reptile light work? UVA/UVB full spectrum bulb, I would assume cheaper than germicidal? HMMMM? Just my 2 nickels worth

I use a "G30T8" light bulb, which you can buy on ebay.  The "G" is for "germacidal".  I think the "30" means 30 watts, and the "T8" means it's a 3-foot long tube-shapped bulb.

The fixture that holds this bulb can be purchased at a hardware store.  Note that there are some precautions you have to take - don't look directly at the bulb and don't let it shine directly on your skin for any length of time.  Best to build a box to mount the lamp in, and keep the box closed up while it is purpling your bottles.

I won't comment on the "to purple or not to purple" question, except to say the bulb I described will simply do what the Sun would do, but maybe about 5 times faster.  It will not turn the bottle the deep, un-natural purple color that an X-ray machine will.
