I use a "G30T8" light bulb, which you can buy on ebay.  The "G" is for "germacidal".  I think the "30" means 30 watts, and the "T8" means it's a 3-foot long tube-shapped bulb.

T8 is the ballast type.  Flouros are either T8 or T10.  T10 are the fat 4' bulbs, T8 are the skinny 4', or 8'.  The T8 are usually cold start/rapid start ballasts.

I was just thinking if UV radiation is powerful enough to excite the trace of manganese in a batch of clear glass could you use higher energy radiation to excite the trace elements in other colors of glass. Or at least excite the element used to make a particular color glass to a higher energy state and produce different colors. I mean used X-ray equipment is fairly available. Or would you have to be producing High Energy Gamma radiation? And I don't know if its a true story or not but I was told of a physics putting a few amber drakes in the university he worked at’s partial accelerator in the 70s and getting some wild colored results. Anyone else ever herd this story? To me the theory sounds firm at least you could instantly purple clear glass if you wanted.

I never heard of UV being able to modify any glass other than glass that has been turned clear with manganese. Neutron radiation will do all kinds of terrible things to glass. Just ask the military what happens to fiber optic cable in a nuclear blast

I know this is a personal dission - But for me I agree with Lobycat.. I will not entertain a purple bottle at all, unless it was origanlly made that way. It's like painting a coin, drilling a hole in it - Making an old coin jewlery, Painting a colletable auto not its original color..Some do but it really takes away from it's original history and original look.. Tumbling i'm torn on - But at least it just cleans the bottle to such a piont it looks as if it was just blown or out of a mold ...Keeps with the spirit of the original bottle !!
Lobe- You get my vote...all for now----Jon
