Congrats on the pontiled med, Matt. Just think how long it was laying right under your feet . The slipware piece is definitely very early, but I can't tell you where it was made for sure. I hope there are some more goodies waiting for you down there. ~Jim

The house was built by Germans and I have found a few other items from PA Germans like a stove plate made by John Potts.

don't undermine the footing

Trying not to, the walls are 20" thick so its pretty stable. I'm repointing it all and drylocking. Pointing gets old after a while but you get better the more you do.

the owner of one of the old houses I stopped at took me on a tour of it,they were remodeling & he was excited to show me all the things they uncovered like original wall paper, & in the cellar he showed me chains & the metal wrist thingys(can't remember what they are called,)  that were embedded in stone, the original owner used on the slaves.  Slave quarters were out back.  basement floor was brick except for the area where the chains were, that was dirt.  I went back to ask about lookin for the privy but the guy had sold & new owners were not amenable to strangers traipsin round their yard. Oh well, glad I got the tour, & history

Finding the old wallpaper in an old house is always neat.  What you described makes me cringe, though.  That's too bad about the privy.  Maybe the new owners will change their minds once you talk to them.

I call my slave ...Son. Unfortunately he's only 6 and cant carry a five gallon bucket of dirt yet

The original guy that built this house had several slaves. In his Will some were freed and given a little land to farm.

Hey Matt, I call my slave son too. Unfortunetly he is 23 and also can't carry a five gallon bucket of anything. Says it is against his ethics and the handle wasn't made to fit his hands. His hands do fit a knife, fork or spoon pretty well.

Matt, why tuckpoint (or repoint) it?  I have a similar setup but haven't really messed with it.  I've always felt that the sheer width and weight of the stone will take care of it.  Is there a reason to mix up a batch of mortar?

I don't have any leakage - do have some crubling of mortar.  I had a small stretch of wall pulled out and replaced due to a former owners stupidity - he let water gather outside and it bowed in the foundation.  Once I corrected that - no problems.

Jim

Lobeycat, It's all done & sealed now.  hope we didn't do anything stupid like undermine the footing. we got it done as quickly as possible.  our basement was a swimming pool, but now it's DRY!!   (I'm dancing with joy at this)

since he's laying down pavers I'd assume he's creating more living space. A nice pooltable. A workshop maybe. A place to stash the mother n law perhaps. While repointing is mind numbingly tedious work it is esthetically pleasing. Less time to frame, insulate and sheetrock the walls.

It would probably last just fine for at least a few hundred more years the way it is.
Lobey is correct , its mostly for looks.  I plan on painting it with drylock so I want the surface stable. Plus the nooks and crannies give the bugs way too good of hiding places now. Doubt I'll ever put a pool table down there but would like it a bit neater and less damp. Will probably expand the wine celler a bit.

Big G   have you done any research at the court house?   I love the history of old homes.   I hope you find some real treasures down there. Of course I would think it all treasures.   & the thought of it being handled by the original owners would make it nigh on impossible for me to throw any of it away.  silly huh.
