Has anyone ever heard of a boxed demijohn? I found one today and There is a hole at the top of the box with the lip showing. You can't see the rest of it because it is in the box. The box dates 1905 and has lots of other writing on it. Please help me with further information. thanks

Haven't heard of it, boxed wine, yes. Maybe it was easier that weaving a basket around it.

I have seen several crated demijohns. Probably worked good for shipping them.

Here's some info Digger. http://adkattic.blogspot.com/2007_01_01_archive.html
Difficult to put a value on such a thing. Hard to put it in a catergory. Is it a bottle? Yeah sure, but no way to get at it with out damaging the box. The ultimate bottle go-with maybe. Very interesting piece for sure. How the heck are you going to ship it? Freight? The thing must weigh 40 pounds.

This demijohn is definitly a neat item. I have never seen one boxed like that. I can tell you one thing though, if it were mine, I would have had to take a saws all or some kind of tool and remove the top so a person could just lift off the entire top of the box in order to to view the container within. It would kill me not knowing whether or not the jar was embossed !
Regretfully, I do not know what an estimated value would be on it, if I did, I would be more than glad to tell you. But I hope you do well with it though, and thank you very much for posting the pics enabling me to see it , Lou

I don't know. I am afraid that it might break the top, and someone already has bid on it. There has got to be a way without breaking anything!!!!!

It is almost certainly an unembossed demijohn. Possibly an enlongated one like at the top of this page http://hometown.aol.com/rebobgem/demijohnpage3b.html

Unless its pontil marked, most of the value is in the crate so it would not be a good idea to damage the crate.

I would certainly be curious, hard to resist seeing whats in there

I am with you Matt, no way in the world I could get myself to put down the crowbar till I had the top of that box popped off, even if there was a chance I would break the blasted thing !  And that would probably be my luck if I tried to open it, would most likely end up breaking it. I have been told numerous times by people around me that I was more or less like a pet Raccoon, if I couldn't crap on, I would tear it up.

NCdigger5, if  you would be afraid of damaging it, for sure leave it alone, would not be worth the risk !

P.S But if you do decide to open it, be sure to POST PICTURES !!

Check this out.  This sounds a lot like the one I am currently selling. It may be a little different but pretty close.  Too bad the picture are not there anymore.  I might email the seller and ask for the pics of it.
