I defy you to find another one  I've been assured it's an ink. Not 100% convinced as of today. Embossed::
Fox Fultz & Webster---New York & Boston---Diamond Brand---Trade Mark.  3 1/4" high. Found a little info on Fox Fultz & Webster, not much else. It's a beauty fo sure...anyone ever seen another? Left the pic pretty large to show the detail...besides it's so damn pretty

Rich.

Seriously, very cool bottle...  looks like a polish of some type though?

Fox Fultz & Webster---New York & Boston

They were a big maker of medical and pharmaceutical products and supplies around the end of the 19th century. There is quite a bit of info out there on them.

here is a little history of the firm ...

This indicates it is an ink. Not proof positive but its possible. The company made all types of stuff, even nursers.

I'd like to think so Gunth. it would be a rare one if it is. I mean the - Diamond Brand - Trade Mark - screams ink but i'm  not so sure. Would Fox bla bla bla, have bottles made to sell Diamond ink? I've had that page saved in my favorites so long i forgot it was there, couple years at least. While cleaning things out i found it again and said to myself....self just do it. It arrived from France today

It screams stove blacking. I have seen other stove blaking bottles that were very ornate. The salesman carried fancy bottles of stove blacking along with a miniture stove to show how good it works. My favorite aunt had a couple of miniture stoves and a dozen or so really fancy stove blacking bottles. Some were shaped like pot bellied stoves, kinda like yours.

Also the salesman would leave the fancy bottle with the customer if they bought the right amount of blacking and there was a Diamond Brand stove.

If you look at some of the docs about the company they show one of thier main products was the Diamond ointment block.
http://books.google.com/books?id=Vc8AAAAAYAAJ&pg=RA1-PA77&lpg=RA1-PA77&dq=Fox+Fultz+%26+Webster&source=web&ots=sK65ztpsod&sig=sqE31jbwzM0UzUO2wRzogDmQfKU&hl=en

That bottle may have been used with that product in some way.

Thank you Gunth, I could read that stuff all day (literally), I love the ads. Which page is the Diamond Ointment Block on? Making me dizzy.

Cappy it might be a sample blacking bottle. The opening is a bit narrow for even the smallest applicator though.

Later I'll provide an additional clue that I cheerfully omitted as to the bottles contents. You know i have to make a game of everything   It's nothing definitive and doesn't really preclude it from the ink bottle category. Very interesting though.
Lobes.

PS....is the site running sloooow today or is my hard drive so loaded down with porn and images of bottles I can't afford that nothing will load?

R.

ahh... so it was likely  meant to be filled by the consumer, and reused...  I bet Matt is on to something with that ointment block...

Thank you Gunth! Finally got around to reading some of that material in your links. I'm assuming I can safely date this bottle 1890-97? What do you make of the Fill Bottle to Line, line?  Personally I've only seen them on battery jugs, which we can rule out here.

Lobes.

I think I have another similar small bottle with that fill-to line. I seem to remember seeing something like that with an inhaler kit.
Seems like it must date in that time frame since the names changed later.

The "fill to this line" embossing means that it's an atomizer. If you filled it past that line it wouldn't work right. It could have been used for perfume, medicine, or anything else that was meant to be sprayed in a mist. I've got one similar to it that actually says the word atomizer on it. I'll dig it out and post a pic when I can find it. Chris

Here's a look at the base of mine. It says Century Atomizers.
