this weekend i hope to get out to my hot spot with my new digging partner. since we both do not know much about bottles, when we go to split up the bottles (if we find any) witch type should i look to take first since this house could be 1850's to 1890's house?

Thanx for all the info!

Personally I would take the ones I like the best, I am sure you have your own favorite types of bottles. I like soda bottles and embossed medicines. I don't really worry about how much they are worth since I am not in it for the money. I am sure others on the forum can tell you which bottles are worth the most. I know bottles in odd colors, rare bottles, and bottles made with earlier methods are worth money.

well the ground is mostly frozen right now here in michigan, my privy finding will have to wait.

I did get connected to the sanborn maps site to view all of the sanborn digital maps.
those maps are great! lot of good info on them.

I did get to that ghost town i was talking about but boy is it hard finding privy's after the bulldozers come by.

i was out using my sanborn maps looking around a 1800's town and did find 4 or 5 emply lots that used to have old homes on them, 2 of the lots had depressions near the back lot line. i hope to check them out more as soon as the ground is not frozen.

also i saw a wooded area behind a large empty lot and went in the woods to check it out, i think i found my first bottle dump. there was a drop-off of about 20 feet, and all along this slop is all kinds of glass and bottles mostly broken. the area is at least 1000 feet long that has broken glass all covered by leaves. then there is another large area further down that has big peices of cement down the drop-off and just a little glass.

i did find 4 bottles just looking around. one was brown quart bottle with "federal law forbids sale or re-use of this bottle"" with a cork type top. another was a clear pint bottle with the same federal warning with small word of script "ball" on the bottom. does the numbers on the bottom of these bottles mean anything like the year or some thing? the other 2 were smaller with just numbers on the bottom.

can't wait to get back there! how deep could these bottle layers go?

could the age of bottles get older once i start digging?

what years did they put that federal warning in the bottles?

on sanborn maps, did they show the outhouses on them? because some of the houses on the maps have small buildings in the yards but they seem to large to be outhouses.

i have found some of the out buildings on the sanbourn maps to be outhouses. some are coal sheds.chicken coops and some just sheds or barns. i always start with what i see on the map.

At this town i have been looking at, there are several emply lots that
are just off the sanborn maps from the 1890's but
show houses there on
the 1920's maps, did the sanborn maps show all the
houses there
or just the main area's, could these lots still have
1800's privy's?
has anyone found privy's from houses that were not
on the maps?
