Pennsylvania Sauce - 6/23/2008 2:09:06 PM    druggistnut Posts: 369 Joined: 1/7/2006 From: Otisville, Michigan Status: offline This was dug in a pit with a mix of glass in it (pontilled & not) and I've never seen one before. I HAVE seen the clear J. Annear mustard or horseradish style bottle, embossed New York. You know the one- it looks like a fish w/ a Chevy bowtie on it. Betty Zumwalt's book lists two other bottles of his  (both extremely rare?), but no mention of this one. I'm assuming that since it is embossed with "&Co," that it is from the period he had a partner. This is also 8 1/2" tall. Any help as far as rarity, etc, would be appreciated. Since the product was exhibited at the Centennial, it was around in 1876 (of course not nessisarily in that container). I would call that lip style a double ring with collar, a fairly unique style mostly found on sauce bottles. I have a "side collection" of sauce bottle that are in that exact shape and form, but with different embossings. They all have embossing around the shoulder, and then one stripe down the body. The ones I have are 1. the common Lea & Perrins 2.  Folkins Table Sauce 3. Horton & Cato Royal Worcestershire Sauce 4. Holbrook Worcestershire Sauce 5. E. Prichard & Co 6. Goodall Backhouse Yorkshire Relish 7. Piccadilly Sauce Co. 8. Joshua Longfield North of London Sauce 9. I thought that was pretty funny but I guess they couldnt really because Pennsylvania Sause was already trademarked. I'm attaching a few more photos, which will help answer some of your questions. I also included a L&P closeup, so the difference is plainly visable. This bottle has the funneling effect in the neck, to grab the corked stopper, a good 1/2" down the throat, which the L&P also has. Kent- You can see the similarities and differences now, right? Doug- I'm leaning towards 1870's, also. Bram- Do you have the quart "jumbo" L&P? I have one for you, with stopper, if wanted. Tom-- (and Bram) I'd really prefer to trade for any Michigan bottles, or one of my ancestors bottles I don't have, BUT, I'm open to ideas. Should I put it on the site auction? Matt-- Yes, as you can see a bit better now, it's a tooled/finished top. It's really easy to pick it out on the collar and the uneven lip top, but, let me ask you this. Does it appear to you that at least the one ring might have been applied/laid on? I agree, it's definitely not a crown top. Yes, I read the info on the stove blacking/shoe polish, and it also stated that he was advertising as a "collector." Zumwalt theorized/mused on that, as well. What WAS a collector, at that point in time? Did he have kids getting glass for him? Mark--Thanks for the kudo on the pics. I really need to get my light box working, but I kind of have the window thing down, now. I just have to remember to move the screen, which you can see in the last pics.
