I can relate to some people thinking that is to much but everyone collects for different reasons. I collect local history it just so happens it is in bottle form most of the time.I would not hesitate to spend that kind of money for a super rare local piece of history in bottle form.Remember they dont make it any more and you never know if it will be your last chance at one. This is purely my opinion as a collector and do not have a large interest in resale value on local stuff. now if it were a cracked milk of magnesia or something like that then I would say they are loco.

Some people have been known to do sum crazy things when it comes to bottles. You have to believe that these two people that were bidding on this bottle have been chasing this bottle for years, and when the opportunity came they went for it. I have been fortunate enough to have been able to dig two extremely rare local meds from my hometown, and I would not sell them for any money(well not 330 anyway). About 4 years ago a rare local went up for auction with an estimated value of between  $300-$500, well the winning bid was $2600 plus 12%!

When your trying to assemble a collection adding a rarity to the group can be quite hard therefore expensive. If you’re  a collector and want a particular bottle sometimes there is no way to get a digger to come off it so throwing big bucks in the guys direction is only way to acquire it and doesn't work 1/2 the time.

It can be ruthless the seller wants the most he can get and the buyer wants to pay as little as possible. This is one of the real benefits of ebay.

One question collectors have to consider is where ya going to get another one? Seems  strange that a clear turn of the century medicine would command such interest. A risky investment, somebody could dig 10 of them in the right hole.

Passthebottle is right on. There must be strong interest in this region.

The interesting thing about this whole discussion is that the bottle in question is a clear local druggist -- druggist bottles have been snickered at for years as "low end", not worthy of collecting.  The bigtime collectors would only go for bitters, Western whiskey fifths, and pontilled sodas as being the bottles of choice.

Finally enough interest and knowledge has been amassed to put local druggists on the map as very collectible and oftentimes very rare with only a handful known of many rare examples.

Lordbud, you are right on. I have said for some time that local druggist bottles were underappreciated/ underrespected by many. I can't speak for every town or area, but I'm sure that many of them are similar to mine as far as these bottles are concerned. Anyone who wants a Lewistown, PA hutch, blob beer or milk bottle can get them. All it takes is a little cash and a trip to an antique store or two.

Druggist bottles are an entirely different animal. There are ZERO on the market here, and believe me, I look for them more than anyone. The small number that are around are in a few private collections, plus a few in our local historical society's museum. Most people that I show my druggists to have never seen them or even knew that they existed. Many of mine are unique or have only 2-3 known examples. There have been old dump diggers here for decades, and lots of privies have also been dug. The druggists just don't come up often, and those that do quickly disappear.

There will always be collectors who could care less about these little clear 1880s-90s druggists, but that's cool. Everyone has different interests. However, I am happy to see that the druggists are starting to be appreciated. ~Jim

I here ya Woody! I also have 100's of NH druggists that have been boxed up and put away. Lets face it though; a common druggist bottle is not worth more than $20. They have to be REALLY RARE or COLORFUL to get over $100, at least in my opinion. That one was a "one known" example from my understanding. Some people will dig deep for what they want to collect...no harm in that.

By the way, this was an excellent thread from beginning to end. Thanks for starting it up Downeastdigger.

Dang it you guys, stop hogging all the NH pharms!

Seriously though, I will buy some if you want to sell them....I'll even do a trade or two... I would let a "good one" go for the right batch of NH pharms...I can't collect every type of bottle...so I want to narrow the focus...

Also....

"Boxed up and put away"...

I have become convinced that this is not collecting, but hoarding...like a squirrel hoards nuts...I have resolved to "get rid of" all my boxed bottles....if I can't display them, I figure I don't "need" them...and maybe someone else can get some joy from them...

Just getting that thought out of my head. Thanks..
