Uh....I  beg to differ. The term enamel when used in conjunction with the term paint, means the type of paint. Typically an air dried gloss type. I could be wrong but I don't think I am this time.

Charlie, CC is picking on me...make him stop and explain the term enamel as used in the context of our conversation. Thanx! LOL

..the black looks like it wore off a bit.. the designs are primitive, but just don't look modern to me.. enamel in this case is paint.. the closest enamel comes to glass is in teeth, but it's not silicon-based, it's calcium...

So you concur with the description stating mid to late 18th C., original paint?

thought you were talking about 16th,17th century enamel items, your items look like 19th century. I thought milk glass didn't appear until mid 19th?

I have read that milk glass started to be used commercially around 1845. That would mean 19th century at the earliest?

My understanding is milk glass first appeared in 1500's Venice, and was originally called "opal glass" ..again Europe's antiquity and lack of hard facts can really mess with our heads..

Actually milk glass has been been around since the 1500's. Most of the items that have surfaced and are available date from the 1700's and 1800's. Attached is a pic of bottle probably from the very early 1700's. Great Museum piece...

By the way, it is my understanding that those two inks were from the late 1780's to maybe 1800 something. Gary

yes , it was invented by Venetian glass makers but I dont think it was used for affordable commercial items until the 19th century.

It seems like before the 19th century it was used for limited high end art items.
Of course not my area of expertise so I could be mistaken.
