I think it might be underneith the well? would you no anything? If you want me to i will post a picture of my back yard?

Hey guys, NO the privy will not be under a well or cistern . A well is dug down to the water table and is for drinking water. It might be located anywhere on the property. A cistern can be a wide range of depths and was to collect rain water for household use. The cistern would be found near the house and the rain gutters would drain into it.
A privy is for human waist before the advent of indoor plumbing ie; crapper, toilet,
sh!thouse . It was usually located further from the house (than a cistern) often near the fence line and downwind. It would have had a small building (outhouse) built over it and be used for about 10 years give or take. Trash would be tossed into it all through it's usage.
If you have found a concrete cap this is most likely on a well or cistern and probably 'modern'.
Older cisterns and wells would be used for trash after their usefulness as a fresh water source had ended.
BE CAREFUL! Wells can be VERY deep. It seems as though this might be what you have found...

The well we found is right next to a creek that is fed by a natural spring about 50yds up the creek. I think the well might have been shallow and they used the creekwater to drink, and feed there garden.

Post a pic of your whole backyard from standing at the back door. Keep an eye out for the cistern too Andy.

Do you think there is an outhouse or privy on the yard? Where do you think it will be?
(Look at the pictures of the backyard)

hey tony and andy, wow thats a big back yard it may be tough to find the privy , look for any depressions in the ground then probe the depression to see if you can find the out line of the walls of the privy, you need a probe!!!!!! its a must, since that yard is so large, im guessing it wont be all the way in the back of the lot, id check mid yard and along the property lines, stand at the back door, and try to guess where it was, look for dips in the ground, as far as the cistern, how about a picture of the back of the house this might help madman

Next time hes on he'll take the pictures.
We found the well in the back left corner of the yard(1st pic).
If you look at the second pic, just to the right of the trampoline where all of that stuff is piled, we have found glass right on the other side of the fence (in the woods) there.
Just so you know mike, the big barn lookin thing in the second pic is the garage.
