hello woodswalker,

I love the bitters bottle....in Hugh Cleveland's book Bottle Pricing Guide 2007 it is listed as a $50-75 bottle.

I'm pretty sure those two indent lines are repairs to the bottle from when it was made. I think if I remember, they would bring a bottle out of the mold, and there was a whole at a thin spot in the bottle, and they would pinch it together with a tool of some sort. I call them "pinch marks" but thats not what they are called. They are really interesting features of old bottles. Thanks for the pics

Hello downeastdigger,  I don't think they would have to lay a patch on glass on in that area.  I think it might be what is called a fold, but even then I can not believe the glass would be hot enough there, to need that treatment.

So I guess that leaves it up to Amanda to send it to me for examination.

It's a pinched, half leaf semi globular insertion of the paraform indentation mark created when the tertiary footbox warmer was improperly heated before the insertion of the punty rod and iron residue in (powderrd form). Thereby collapsing the molecular structure of the glass, creating a hole or rift if you will in the structure of time and space.

woodswalker,
An interesting fact....I found Samuel Harter listed in the St. Louis Directory from 1878 thru 1895....Harter Medicine Co., first on 213 N. Main street and later on 815-817 N. 17th street. I could not locate him in any of the corresponding years census' though.

Regards,

Good morning all....Thanks for all the great comments!!!  We had such a great time...it was Josh's first time and he said it was really fun even tho I found most of the bottles.....

I think most of them were ABM except that sweet a** bitters bottle I found right there at the end.

And as for where we were digging...I figured we'd start right at the top of the hill behind the foundation of the house...I wasn't sure if the older bottles would be at the bottom of the hill or top....so Right at the top around a few huge rocks about ten feet from the foundation I started digging with my claw rake and probing around....Thats where I found the toy tractor and most the other smalls with no embossing...also found the Lysol bottle there to.
I kinda got tired of that spot and really wanted to find where the privy is on this place  So we moved over to a place that the ground was sunk way in and had old floor boards still in place....Mostly all I dug up there was the small broken horse shoe and lots of broken pottery and pieces of old china.............This spot was maybe 40 feet from the foundation in front of the hidden barn foundation which was so over grown I didn't even try to get down in there to find my shovel i lost several months ago.....At this time it was about noon and the bugs were getting bad so I started just walking the whole area down thru the dry creek bed...which was littered with all kinds a shards of glass and headed back up the hill. As I was on the phone calling my mom to come and get us I started stepping around the walls of the foundation and thats where i saw the bottom of the bitters bottle sticking up!!! I think I coulda danced in circles over that one.......

I'm going to have to say that I will most likely be trespassing there again....threres more out there I can feel it in my bones...and it seemed like no matter where we dug or probed there was glass or old rotted boards or some metal mystery....So theres plenty more thats going to come out of there...next time I will check down in the foundation of the house more...just wish I could figure out the privy location!!!
Well maybe I might have my first bottle worth selling...who knows I may keep it or may not depends on how tempting of offers I may get I suppose

off to post the unexpected items....thanks for reading my mini book lol and hope you enjoyed the pics!!
Manda~

Hey Amanda, You did good. I love the little doggie. Looks like the same exact bottle I was asking questions about earlier this year. It is indeed a dolls bottle and went to an Ideal Doll I do believe. The little notch on the back of the bottle lined up with a spot on the dolls lip. I think it was the type of doll that made water in its diaper.  . Love the bitters, that's an awesome one there. That Lysol is pretty sweet too. It'll look great next to your fluff jar collection.  Swiz

I hope it has a lot more to offer with a bottle the quality of that bitters. Check that place out real well and good luck. I really hope you score some other really nice finds soon. You're doing good so far. I'll sacrifice a listerine bottles for you on my next dig. Swiz

Oh thanks soooo much I do hope to get back out there this weekend....maybe even one evening after work.  We were worried about being spotted cause it's all posted no trespassing...so we got dropped off...I'm thinking I'll just park my car in the drive way across the street...house is for sale and no one lives there....but that might draw some attention....just make the old beater look like its broke down on the side a the road lol!! But I just have no idea where to dig...everywhere I probed there was glass....and kids toy parts everywhere and theres gotta be a privy or two out there....I broke my shovel and my cheap little rake is about to break so I need new tools!! But If it's there I'm hell bent on findin the stuff!!!!

Hey Manda!!

That bitters is SWEET!!  Congrats on the new spot!!!  Sounds like you really got the digging bug now!  Keep at it.  Breaking a shovel is good luck in my experience.  Also if you ever find any horseshoes, keep em close to you while you dig at the site.  I'm really not superstitious, but found this trick to work a couple times LOL.

Keep us posted with pics and progress!

All the best and good luck!!!

So far at this site I have found 3 horse shoes...2 were from larger work horses and the one from saturdays dig was broken...but I found the other piece...that shoe was much smaller than the others...maybe a kids pony.....the mystery behind it all keeps you wondering what happened to these people and why did they leave it all behind.....of course back then they were going thru a depression and lots of people lost their farms.....this is the foundation thats in my pic on my profile...I had a heck of a time climbing thru all the brush to get in to that silo but it was pretty cool....I wish It were my land....it is just the most beautiful peaceful place  and I wish I could find out who owns it and or who used to own it back in the early days!!! I always love to learn the history of it all.....Sorry I had to trespass but it was worth it...and don't tell anyone but I'm going to do it again!! whats the sense in all that stuff laying out there for another 100 years? looks better on my shelf I think :)~

Geez Lobes! You  crack me up!

Amanda - nice finds! Keep in mind that farm privies are not usually loaded like town privies. They had lots of land to dump their garbage on, so it didn't need to go "down the hole".... Not saying it's empty, but I'd concentrate more on areas where you know there's stuff for now, rather than worrying where the privy was.

Some of my favorite thoughts about Trespassers:

Piglet used to live in a Beech Tree, south of Pooh's house, 100 Acre Wood Southwest. Next to this house was a piece of a broken sign which read, "Trespassers W." This was believed to be Piglet's grandfather's name, and it is short for "Trespassers Will", which is short for "Trespassers William". Piglet's grandfather had had two names in case he lost one.
