I dug what looks like an identical piece to your insulator? a few years ago, never really did find out just what it was, maybe someone will know.

Thanks guys.  That is so cool to see another whatchacallit from another digger.  One final pic of some of the cleaned up ones from this dig.  Thanks for looking. Buster.

Almost forgot to post the giant milkglass cosmetic jar.  Thing is real heavy.  I used a coke bottle to show its size.  Atlas Hazel.  Buster

Hello!

Indeed, the small glass object you've dug up is a lightning rod insulator. These were used to insulate the grounding wire on lightning rod systems running down the side of buildings. In use, these would have a metal bracket that would allow them to bolt in to the side of the building, with the small glass tab on the side of the insulator keeping it stuck on the bracket.
Here's a picture of the full set-up.

And here are a couple in use:

A good find for certain! Keep up the good digging!

Thanks Steve.  I was hoping it to be bimal, but still nice as an abm.

Thanks for the link Sergio.  I almost tossed that thing into the discard pile.  Glad I held on to it.  Thanks for all the help identifying it.  That's what so cool about this forum, so many knowledgeable folks on here.   Buster.

While I was waiting for the creek to go down, I did a quick dig at the ol dump.  Not much, but a few keepers.  This old car jack fell out. Don't know anything about it but I've seen it in a photo of a gas station collector somewhere.  Maybe clean it up and paint it.

Has a glass swirl on top.  I thought that the picture would have come out better.

Thanks for looking Mr. Fred. I'm wanting to hit the Ol dump and trestle dump real hard, but things just keep popping up.  Just not enough time. I'm about due for a Hooky Day from work.  Have to think of a reason.

I used about an hour of Friday's time off to go back to the dump. Someone asked "How deep do you dig a dump?".  You dig until you reach the original bottom.  It may be one feet or twenty feet.  Hope that the different layers show in this pic.  You can tell that this has not been disturbed because of the different layers.
