jvharp ~

I looked on Google Earth to see where Knob Lick, Missouri was located. From what I can tell it looks like a very small town with a very small population. The blob bottle you referred to must be pretty rare. I hope you find one some day. Try digging around on that nobby mountain that is nearby and has the salt licks on top of it.

Thanks. Neat song. I added a line below ...

Here's the "30 Below" San Diego bottle that local collectors are willing to pay top dollar for. Not seen in this photo is a penguin on the right side of the label.

Just for the record here is my little penguin buddy. If anybody ever comes across one of these extremely rare soda bottles, please let me know and I'm sure I can find a buyer for it.

Thanks

Since Don Diego / Tom Hernandez is no longer with us, I have appointed myself as the temporary host/greeter to invite everyone to the "Antique Bottle Club of San Diego" annual bottle show that will be a one day event held on Saturday, June 11, 2011. If you have ever wanted to come to southern California this would be a good time to enjoy our many attractions and have some fun in the sun. I hope you can make it.

Hi Bob. I have a that San Diego Soda Works picture, enlarged and framed [image][/image]hanging on my wall, and the umbrella says "Orcherade." The photo is dated 1903. You are right, there are several different bottles in the window. Some have diamond shaped labels. Sure wish I could make out what they are.

I keep looking at those diamond labeled bottles and they sure look like Coca Cola bottles to me. In my research, Coke was first bottled in San Diego in 1910 by two former San Diego Soda Works employees the Schnepp brothers who opened up their Silver Gate Soda Works bottling plant right down the street from San Diego Soda Works. According to the San Diego Historical Society, the picture was taken in 1903, so if they are Coke bottles they were imported from some where else. The diamond label was used by Coke bottlers in San Diego & Los Angeles up until around 1915-17 when the Hobble Skirt version became the norm. I have talked to a couple old time bottle diggers from San Diego, and they told me they have dug many of these Coke bottles in dumps they dated in the teens by the stuff they were finding. Of course the paper lable was gone and no city was embossed on them. I do have a 1915 & 1923 Hobble Skirt bottle embossed San Diego on the bottom. FYI - Sorry for the large picture of the umbrella. Didn't know it would be that large when I uploaded it....Mike

Mike ~

It's amazing how clear the enlarged photo turned out. I tried it myself but it was blurry. I'm glad you were able to do it. You can almost read the labels on the three bottles that are right below the point of the umbrella on the right. I agree they sure look like straight-sided Coca Cola bottles like the one in the 1909 ad below. I never heard of "Orcherade." It sounds like a blend of orange and cherry. Unless it's a play on the word "Orchard" and means various fruit flavors. (Except that strawberries and grapes don't grow in orchards).  ???  Thanks too for the local history. Have a good bottle club meeting and please tell Carol Serr not to give up on me. I'll make it one of these days, and am looking forward to meeting her and others.

T.D. ~  Thanks. I'd like to see a mint bottle myself. In fact, I'd like to own one someday. But I am more than happy with the one I bought from sdmike ... which I just upgraded to a 9.5 in case anyone is interested in purchasing it for $350.00   Lol

I thought I would "cap off" this thread with the picture below of a "30 Below" bottle cap. I'd sure like to come across one of the bottles someday. Heck, at this point I'd even settle for one of the caps. The one shown here sold on e-bay in February of 2008 for $46.50

And here is a little reminder should anyone ever find a "30 Below" acl bottle and wants to sell it. Mike Bryant is the collector I bought my "Don Diego" from. Thanks again Mike. I really appreciate you holding it for me.

Here is the other cap I have. So that makes at least 3 different ones I have seen. Of course 30 Below was bottled in other cities, but I am sure one of these has to be the San Diego cap.

Hey sdmike ~

I hope you see this. I found it in one of my soda pop books today. No doubt it's one the diamond label bottles we were discussing like those shown in the window in the old San Diego Soda Works photo. The bottles are definitely good ones to look for, but will be tough to find with original labels.

sdmike ~

I am beginning to think I should have titled this thread "Orcherade." It intrigues me and I have been doing some research on it. You may already know all about it, but it's new to me. In case you didn't notice it in my last post, Orcherade had at least two different labels. The one shown below is an original and is the one with a combination diamond with a triangle on the bottom. This particular one indicates it came from cherryvale, Kansas and at the bottom shows a copyright date that appears to be 1905. In the post that follows this one I will show you a postcard I came across with the illustration of a similar label. Another interesting thing I discovered is that most, if not all of the printing was done by a company from Chicago called "Hutchinson & Son." But I do not know if there is a connection with this name and the Hutchinson style bottles.

Bob

The inked in writing says "I think this is Illeyed also." The term "Illeyed" strikes me as an odd use of a word meaning he didn't like the use of  "Artificial Sweetner" on the label. The website I got this from gave no further description or details.

Orcherade Label - circa 1905

And here is the postcard which is postmarked 1909. Notice the same diamond/rectangle label. Also printed by W.H. Hutchinson & Son of Chicago.

Lastly is this 1915 catalog by W.H. Hutchinson & Son for ordering soda bottlers supplies. Notice the "Orcherade" bottle cap in the upper center of the left-side page. I zoomed in on the small print and it basically says that "Orcherade" was a good brand to have as a stable seller in case the other brands should suffer in sells.

            {By the way ... In my first post I incorrectly said "triangle" label, but meant "rectangle"}
