those crown style stoppers are made out of pewter. usually are seen with a brass wash finish , to make them look like gold. i dont know what is going on here ,but i do know the stopper does not belong on that bottle. i am looking at some of these stoppers that i have dug . i have several and have never dug them with that style bottle. i am sure that stopper belongs on perfume or toilet water.

Are we sure they're pewter? My pewter doesn't easily bend? Boy, these two bottles have generated the most interest and commentary I've seen on the forum since I joined!

I am not sure of the metal on the stoppers. I did call the antiique store today to ask them if they could call the dealer and ask him where he got them. They were rather rude and told me no. I asked why. They said even if they did contact him he would not tell me where he got them and reveal his "source". I told them I was only trying to find out the history of the bottles. I was told that they would not know the history!
This having been said. Say I took off the stoppers and the skull labels. Can someone guess the age, and maybe actual value?

It would be safe to assume that the stopper was used to disperse some sort of product out of the bottle.
Whether or not it came from the bottles in question is a mystery.
Maybe it did, maybe it didn't.
The significance of the poison labels still remains a mystery.
I doubt if this is an apothecary bottle, as it was implied when he bought it, but it may have been something that someone concocted to see if anyone would show interest in buying it.
What bothers me is that the two bottles are not from the same mold. They are similar in appearance, but if you look at the ridges around the neck you'll see the difference in the two.
I have dug inkwells, as Harry suggested, in this shape, although the necks weren't as wide as these bottles.
Why would an ink bottle have that sort of stopper, though?
The bottles do look like they are from the late 1800's or early 1900's.

Bearfan . . .

That was a predictable response from the antique mall operator.

I think that the stoppers are likely to be made of pot-metal.

As ink bottles, you might get some, even most, of your money back. The green bottle is a desirable color. And they are an unusual size. You can check eBay for values. Better yet, take them to a bottle show for an appraisal. Where do you live...in Chicago?

I live in New Hampshire, everything is still frozen. I am not sure where to find a bottle show around here to attend.

Not many bottle shows to attend here, except in Keene in the fall.
There are some in Portland, Maine coming up, I believe.
What part of New Hamster are you from????

Bearfan, we have a bottle show coming up on Sunday. April 4. It's being held at the Italian Heritage Ctr. in Portland, Maine. It's a good show, all ranges of bottles fro 5o cents to $4000+!. I believe early admission for buying etc., starts at 8:30 am and cost is $15. Regular admission is at 11:30 (?), cost is $5.00. Check the site here on the forum for Bottle Shows & Exibitions for exact details. Easy to get to, right off the Congress st. exit west. I'll send you exact directions if you like, just drop me a line. Maine Digger

I am going to list these bottles on ebay as they are shown here. I do not know enough about them to take them "apart"----wood any of you mind if I used your comments on these bottles in the auction? I am an honest person and what people to have an honest opinion of what these bottles are. If I could have your permission first that would be great. Thanks For your help guys. If you want me to leave a link to the auction I would be more than happy to post it for you here once they are up and running.

Hi Bearfan, you can HONESTLY say that your 2 bottles were responsible for the longest running dialog about bottles across the US, England and Australia! lol I guess I'm kinda suprised that you don't want to keep them after all this. Since you are selling them, you still might want to sell the bases as inks after taking off that 'poison' label. I think you could also sell the stoppers independently of the bottles. WHATEVER! LOL Good luck. Oh, last thing, I couldn't stop laughing at your description of these as 'Apothacary Holy Poison Inkwells'

Hey guys, the bottle are up on ebay. Just Click On "Apothecary Bottles" below

APOTHECARY BOTTLES

I want to thank everyone for their help---it was fun. I can not wait until I find some other odd bottles to show you. I am hopping to at least make my money back, but we'll see. I could not pick which messages to use in the auction, so I used them all! I would have just put a link to here, but ebay is really funny about linking out of their site. I just recently found a rounded bottom bottle, but found through some research that they are not that rare at all. AGAIN, A MILLION THANKS TO YOU ALL!!!!!!!!!!

Good job on the eBay ad. That IS one of the most interesting, informative ads I have ever seen on eBay.

--------Good luck!

Wow woody you are good---how did you know that? I did buy them there---was looking at them for a couple weeks---they put them on sale---and I asked if I could get them for $50.00 and the dealer said yes. So do you know the dealer??

Thank You Harry for the compliment!! I try and be an honest seller in all of my auctions so people know exactly what they are getting. It is funny how I shop, I get stuff that I like, I figure if I like it, someone else has to like it! Sometimes it works for me but others it does not. I am not a seasoned "Dealer" I am just a guy who loves to buy odd things--enjoy them for a bit---and then see what I can do with it. This form has peeked my interest in bottles in a big way. Thank You Guys for that, my wallet however does not thank you! LOL

No, Bearfan, I don't know who the dealer is there.
Being a group shop there are many dealers there and I haven't frequented the place for quite a while.
I have seen some nice bottles there over the years, but they didn't seem like much of a bargain to me.
Of course I'm used to digging them myself.
I work in Belmont, by the way, and live in Gilmanton.
