Question about making a tumbler - 1/17/2006 7:15:23 AM    Python   Posts: 128 Joined: 11/11/2003 From: Alabama Status: offline I was talking to a guy at work yesterday about making a tumbler. He suggested using an old waser or dryer motor (which I happen to have both) and running it through a reostat. I don't know alot about the way this sort of thing works so I submit it to you guys and gals. This sounds too simple to me. What's the catch? Is it possible that this could work? Has anyone tried it before? The reason I ask is I have some rocks I would like to tumble as well and having one tumbler do both would be great. Right now I don't have any bottles to tumble but I was wondering anyway. Thanks Post #: 1

You have to dig bottles to put into the tumbler... You can't go into bottle tumbling with the hope that "...if you build it, they will come..." I also have a reostat, I just have to taek it out of the snakes cage. That should be fun. Any idea what I could use for rollers? How about what speed to tumble rocks and glass (not together!)? If I don't dig another bottle for the next 5 years I could still tumble every day for the next 10. Cindy says if I buy the tickets she will save the money. I guess she is gettin excited since she talked to Pam. We may have created a monster. Yeah Jason, Go back down the Cleaning and repairing thread to "build my own tumbler". Its on the first page. In that thread you will see many different tumblers , including mine, and alot of other neat ideas. I used inline skate wheels and threaded rod for rollers. I used a gear motor which turns slow and used pulleys to get the proper speed. The advantage of the gear motor and less revolutions is it was cheaper to run than a motor that it turning 1725 to 3450 rpms. I used conveyor rollers and put tubing over them. The trick to putting the tubing over the metal conveyors is liquid that is used to put golf grips on golf clubs. Once it evaporates it won't move unless you cut it off. Not pretty but I used it for 4 years straight 7 days a week. I've since sold it to my buddy and he has used it for at least 3 years now. I was just thinking that hooking a rheostat up to a washer motor was just too simple an idea to work. It has been my experience that when things sound so simple, there must be a catch somewhere. All my machines are built using hand tools. My bed tumbler runs 4 at a time with two sets on the table. It will run 4" up to 12" tubes that are 23 1/2" long. I just finished two "end over end" tumblers to get long necks clean. They are full and working well now. Not too sure how to load pictures - help please Polisher Paul (in reply to Python) Post #: 9

Even my wife said so and she is not sure what it does. Next time you want to load a pic just sellect "embed pic in post" then "click here to upload". If you pics are to big reduse them by 50% with your editors image button then bring it back up to 50% with the slide. Also I have found that the long skinny necks on some bottles were hard to get as shinny at the rest of the bottle. The ene over end does this quickly.
