Do they ever sell tumbling machines at shows? Been thinking about making a weekend out of that New Hampshire show; be nice to know if I could bring one home :)

This will be my first show in New England, comming up from Seminole, Al. on the Emerald Coast, but maybe some of the regulars can tell you. Look foward to seeing you there.

Hello Kelley.

I do the usual trick, cover it with "silputy" just to keep the compounds off it.
Most of my tumbling is on the inside of cut glass items. Not too much work on bottles. I don't know one from the other, "Good glass" is my main work.

Thanks for asking, Polisher Paul www.paulmnulton.com

Well, i saved the last two pictures posted of tumbling machines, and said to Dave, "here's what we need to build." I'll see how far that gets me (BEG).

WOW, those are some impressive machines paul. I may have to build some of that 'just for fun'. What really got my attention is that marble reconditioning machine on your marble page. There are some marble threads on this forum, so I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be interested in an overview on how that contraption works.

Hello Brian;

Thanks for looking at the machines.
They all came about because of my customers. I do glass repair and polishing at antique shows in NJ-NY-PA-MD VA.

When someone asked if I could polish their 2" sulfide marble , I had no answer. Looking around the internet I found a group of marble people that were grinding and polishing marbles. The general idea was there and I constructed my own version of their machine.

Then I had to do the same with paperweights.

Sick glass became the same story. I just had to learn how to do it. My local bottle tumbling guy liver 50 miles away, 100 round trip. It took up too much of my time traveling to see him. I was able to look over his stuff and that gave me the ideas I needed to construct my own.

The bed machine does a great job but the long skinny necks took too long, that was the reason for the end over end machine. The bottom of vases was the same thing, it wasn't getting the crud out.

I just love to build things!! Look at the last item on my web site, you will understand. "I'd rather be flying, high or low" www.paulmnulton.com

I'm happy to help other builders , Thanks, Polisher Paul

OOPS Brian; the explanation of the marble machine.

It is a three headed machine that uses pipe couplings for thse grinding heads. The slurry sets in a cup under the heads and a chain acts as a conveyor bring up the grit. I start with 200 grit and go to 1000 then to polish by hand.
Motors are geared to run at 120 RPM's The different sets of heads will grind marbles from 1/2 " up to 2 1/2"

Two years ago the motors were surplus at aprox. $10.00 each , they are all gone now . I had to purchase new ones at $80.00 EACH !! that put an end to building for others.

Hope this covers the questions.

Regards, Polisher Paul

Yes, that is one I built for Pete that has the marble site. It shows a nice close up of the chain in operation with a set of the small heads.

Hi Paul after seeing this picture it makes more sense how it works. Seems like an interesting project to put on a back burner. Glad you joined the site

Hi Kelley
As for the pontils, I just cover them with "silputty" works every time .

There are times that the end over does a better job in general. Still not to sure why.
I have found that a container that is nearly full of copper has less chipping inside. The copper doesn't "fall" to far and turning at 45 RPM's helps.

I have been able to tumble vases with rippled edges by sealing them with a piece 1/4" plate glass and silputty.

The toughest challenge I have had so far is in the machine now, A "cranberry glass swan" with wings. It is in a 12" tube packed with cut up "swim noodles" all around . It should be done this weekend. Pictures to follow.

Thanks for asking, Polisher Paul
