I think you are correct , since graphite wont actually stick to molten glass, the residue probably wouldnt stay on the glass like iron oxides do. Good thing i never used the term graphite pontil in my book...

So if I find a "sandy" feeling bottom...it is likely an improved pontil? I have dug several bottles with the rough sandy feeling bottom...

Hey Richard, Most likely it is but keep in mind that most pontil marks made other than by a glass pontil can be considered improved. The roughness you feel is probably from an iron {improved} pontil rod that may have left a deposit of some kind {sand, powdered glass, iron} that has faded away. Some sand and glass powder pontils were fire polished and take a lot of study to ID.

Just keep in mind that there are glass pontil rods and iron pontil rods. Everything else is just a method to attach or remove a pontil rod efficiently and leaves different kinds of marks on the bottle.

Thanks Cappy!

I almost bought an "improved pontil" ink last year...cone aqua, crude, droopy lip, bubbly...large ring of "sand/glass" on the bottom...$35 bucks..if it were any other color...or had any embossing...alas..none..

Hey everyone, have you forgotton the white? According to Cecil Munsey that one has much speculation to it. One theory is it was a kind of coating to try and keep breakage down with all the washing. I'll try and get a scan of the page if your interested.

Here is an interesting tidbit. The first trade mark obtained in the State Of California was for white paint on the bottom of soda bottles. The year was 1861.

That's more that interesting. That seems to confirm what Munsey was saying, although he had white dating mostly between 1870-80. I thought I read somewhere that the first actual bottle manufacture out west was around 1859. I can't find that info now.
Where did you get the patent info?
