Hi BR you are right about date, Lewis and Clark took till 1806 to find it. Lot of crime your way, what's going on. You know the dates for New Westminister BC bottle and antique show.

Hey all- this dump had a few good finds in it after this post, but it dried up pretty fast. I tried under the rock pile in various places but its all hard pan. Dang. I figure that the original homesteaders were pretty poor, consisering that there wasn't one whole fruit jar in this dump, but likely 30 or so broken. Normally in dumps around here I can get at least 5-10 fruit jars per site. Oh well, I'm moving on to bigger and better things. Oh, and David E- when's that show?

Hi all,
I recently found a farm dump and I am looking for some tips as I am new to this hobby of bottle digging and such. The dump is located in a pasture and it runs off into a pond. The dump is approximately 40 foot long. I noticed it because there were bottles sticking out of the ground. I started in the middle and started to remove the bottles. I got about two foot down and noticed that there was another layer of older bottles and miscellaneous bottles. There were also bottled buried in the embankment of the dump so I am not sure how wide it actually is. Unfortunately I got rained out and had to quit. Does anyone know where exactly I should start to dig rather than in the middle as there is so much there? Should I start at the bottom and work my way up? Thanks for any tips and happy hunting!

Hey Lori, Welcome to the forum. I guess you have found that bottle digging and collecting is very addictive.

You will enjoy digging and showing your new finds here. We do expect pictures.

You'll get alot of different answers to "Where exactly do I start digging" but I personaly would start at the bottom and I would sift the dirt too. You can build a sifter from 1x4 boards and hardware cloth {rabbit wire}. There may be old buttons, marbles, coins and who knows what elese in there.

Mostly, enjoy yourself with the hobby of bottle collecting.

Thank You for the idea capsoda. I am sending a photo (hope it works, this is new to me) of my first days findings in the farm dump. I didn't think I did too bad although I have no idea what I have here or what the date on them are! I am looking forward to going back. The brown bottle is an S.F. Baker (Keokuk, Iowa) bottle. There are two Chesebrough New York Vaseline jars, an aqua Dr. Jayne's Tonic Vermifuge bottle, Ball canning jar and clear glass ball cap, a perfume bottle and others I am not sure on.

Hey Lori, Nice looking finds. Looks like a turn of the century to the Early 1930s but there could be older stuff underneath.

Good Luck and Happy Bottle Digging.
