A little tip for the ivy. They sell stuff in the store for protecting against contact with it, save your money. Go to the dollar store and grab some cheap hair spray. A coating with that will keep the oil off your skin. Another tip for it is when you know you've been in contact with it, DO NOT take a bath in a tub. Shower ONLY. A friend of mine got into some with the weed whacker, and since his back hurt, he took a bath in a tub. The oil floated off of his skin, onto the surface of the water, and when he stood up to get out, it spread evenly all over his body. I know us guys scratch alot down there, but watching him deal with his itching was a warning to NEVER submerse after ivy.

Hey Ron...

That sounds like the making for a good R-rated movie... Oozing, female, doctor's office, dropping trou, giggling, flesh... Heck, we may have to bump that rating up a bit!!!

Hey Josh,
thanks for the ivy tip. have been wearing long sleeved shirts and long pants and still seem to be getting it, so I will try your tip. Although I am avoiding the plant, I think it is in the soil.

Stayed out of the woods yesterday and had some luck. Will post pics later.

Yes Josh, thanks for the TuchNu tip. I will have to go get some soon. Poison Ivy is my worst digging enemy. It’s hard in the fall and spring for me because all the plants are dead. Lots of times I will dig though the roots and get is all over my arms and then wipe the sweat off my face and get it there too. I have tried Fels Naptha soap in the past and it works pretty well if you take a shower in time.

Actually, that was Sean with the Tech-Nu suggestion.  I don't really get the stuff myself.  The only time it affects me is when I get poked or scratched, and touch ivy on the same spot.  I got ripped to pieces a couple weeks ago clearing some briars unprepared(short sleeve shirt, no gloves, jeans, DUH!), after the briars were gone, I cleared quite a bit of ivy from some trees and a path.  Two of the larger of the scratches itched and had a few bumps, but a week later and no treatment(other than soap and water) and it was gone.  Hey, by the way, I'll probably have another installment for this topic soon.  I found a dump in the middle of town on an old school site and have already started digging.  It's kinda shielded from view by thick trees, but I'm sure someone will hear me digging before too long.

Went digging last week, it gets dark early, out come the LEDs on the head, dirts flyin, glass is surfacing, blue lights are shining on the road next to us.... u h oh.

Everything was cool, he just wanted to make sure we were legit but it is the first time they've made an appearance, I can understand their point of view on it, seeing our cars and everything.
He radios in "Oh these guys are ok, they're just out diggin bottles" "Boy you guys really get into this"

Anyone have any other stories or ways to dig in the dark without causing havoc?  Has anyone heard of calling them ahead of time to let them know you would be digging at a certain spot with your car there, give them all info, etc?

We need a bottle detector.

Man me too!
I got popped by two Deputys.

I saw an empty property, house boarded up, no posted signs at all.

I found the barn! Lots of old glass and then I heard "turn around son"
I politely told the deputys "the bottles made me do it" Thay got a kick out of that.
I gave one a Foleys kidney pill sample and the other a Kilmers sample bottle.
They said they were just checking in to make sure I was not up to no good, they said stay out the buildings, but roam the property if you like.

Whhheew!

Good thing I always carry some sample bottles!

You guys are so funny! Heck, trying to even find an abandoned house on this 2x5 mile island is tough. As a police officer myself, I know just about all of them and who owns them. How's this for irony though: years ago before I started digging and when I used to be on bike patrol (I'm a detective now) I went around and identified all of the abandoned houses. Beings how there aren't many of them they all attracted the homeless, crack addicts, etc. as residents. So, being the good little community policing officer I was, I contacted the owners and had most of them boarded and posted! Can you beleive that? Well, the good thing is no one else can wander up and dig them now without permission and  I do know most of the owners. My first attempt at permission went off without a hitch and so far so good on the others I've tried. I swear I did not plan that out!

You guys don't know how lucky you are in the wide open spaces - snow or no snow! Take it from me, if a cop walks up to you, just do like bikegoon said. You can get them interested by chatting them up. Play dumb if you can (ie; if no signs posted), don't get caught in a lie, be friendly and having hot coffee doesn't hurt! Remember, they're just people too.

Hey Conch, isn't the ocean wide open enough for ya? Just kidding. I'm planning a trip down there as soon as this job ends (not sure when). Do you have to be a certified diver to hit the ship wrecks with a guide?

Back in the day, when redevelopement was goin' full bore in Old Sacramento, and the "watchdogs" were keepin' an eye on the buildings to be torn down, the only way we could get around was the paddy wagon. We'd load up all our stuff, drive down the alley, then bail out into the buildings. My buddies would drive away like nothin' was up, returning several hours later. Not a soul ever caught on. Full sacks of pontilled sodas, foods and meds were common occurances in those days.

That's great Mike! I really love old digging stories. Maybe I'll do a post so everyone can share their funniest stories.

Zane, no one will take you out for a wreck dive without a cert. There are some shallow areas along the beach that you can snorkel, like the area where the 1800's bump was. I think I mentioned before that there should be some good stuff out there since the hurricanes came through in 2004 & 2005. If you do come down, I'll even take you there. You can do a "resort" certification (I think they still offer that) which is a one day lesson that allows you to do a shallow tank dive with a guide, but not on a wreck.

Thanks Brenda, I have a name of a diving instructor up my way. I'm not going to be making my way down there for some time so, I might try to get certified first, if i can. I'll defintely look you up before I make the trip though. It sure would be nice to have a guide who also is in good with the local law enforcement.

Hey Zaner, There is always them little plastic pools and floaty wings.....

I was going to start diving again so I could go to Maine and dive with Wayne but I had to see my doc first. She said why don't I take up a nice nonagressive easy on the bones hobby like demolition or bungy jumping without a bungy. I took that diving was kind of a bad idea.
