Hey Dave, Digger Odell is updating the Pontil Medicine Encyclopedia and may be interested on a pic or two and any info you can give.
Here is the thread.

I tumble bottles and so does Steve. I am guessing he won't tumble it for fear of  wrecking it. It will probably go to a professional.
What do you guys think about polishing something like this? One school of thought is leaving it as found. So, if you tumble it, those guys gripe about condition. On the other hand, I have seen those auctions where a bottle is a little hazy and it sure seems like it could have done a little better if it was cleaned.
Also, where would you send it to be auctioned? Heckler is probably the biggest name in the game and it seems his stuff does well. But, the danged commision is so high. BAM doesn't have the commission, but are you getting the best audience?
Let me know your thoughts.

Dave...

I would talk to and seek advice from as many collector/dealers as I could to get a feel for the potential  range on that beauty... Then test it out on ebay with an overblown reserve (something well over the highest estimate from the experts)... That's sort of what I did with my Dr. Townsend's (altho I put my reserve just at the highest estimate and was lucky that a couple of bidders really wanted it)... That should tell the lucky owner what it will bring in the present market...

As to tumbling, insure it if possible, then tumble... The consensus seems to be that high-end collectors prefer sparkling glass... I know I do, not that I'm much of a hi-ender...ROR...

Whale of a bottle, you weren't kidding.Nice as anything I have ever seen that was dug.The sky is the limit on that one for sure.I would guess $8000+ and would not be shocked if it doubled that at a major auction.I think Glassworks and Heckler's get the best prices. You are right about the commission sucking, but that's what it takes to get the highest price.Ebay will do as well or better than the smaller auction sites. As far as cleaning if you think most collector's would want it tumbled then you need to decide who takes the risk.If it needs cleaned it will sell for considerably more if done before sale.Killer, dig nonetheless. You guys dig hard and will have more great finds in the future.Good luck,Doug

Just an opinion...
If I was selling it , I would sell it on EBAY... IF you have a good, high feedback, IF you take lots of really good photos, AND you give a solid guarantee.
If you can't set up an EBAY auction matching the quality of the bottle then let the professional auction house do it and pay the commission. I have seen some great bottles sell on ebay for low prices because of poor promoting.
I would not sell it right now, bottle prices are currently quite low, good for buyers, bad for sellers.
As far as tumbling it, if it doesnt look too bad , leave it alone. It wont affect price a lot on a super rare bottle unless it looks really ugly. From your photos it looks pretty good AS IS.

Guys,

Thanks for all the super advice. This bottle couldn't have happened to a better guy/journeyman digger. I will make sure he reads all of this.
Another question that came up is do the auction houses report the sales to the IRS? I am sure they would want a piece of the pie. This may impact where the bottle goes for sale. Any thoughts?

Hi again ,
I asked Jeff Noordsy what he thought about your bottle . And he said he had already talked to Steve about it. And as he told Steve....It could possibly surpass  $10,000.00 at Public Auction !
Like I said before ... GREAT FIND !

I think the bottle looks fine the way it is. It's old and was buried for a while. I would be afraid that tumbling would wipe out that iron pontil. I have to agree with promoting it well and set a high reserve. With a bottle like that I don't think the lack of sparkles will affect it at all. If a guy can bid a few $1,000 on a bottle like that then he can certainly afford to have it tumbled himself. Let the new owner decide if it needs a tumble. It'd be a real shame to find out the hard way that the bottle shards in the tumbler are nice and shiny. That baby looks aged to perfection. If anything have it professionally cleaned, not tumbled. Just my opinion. Jason

I agree with alot of my compadres. With a bottle that beautiful and  rare, to clean or not to clean is a very secondary consideration. I wouldnt mess with it too much. Other than to maybe to take it for a honeymoon in the Poconos lol. The "big guns" are probobly salivating waiting for that to come up. Congrats again. I feel inspired.

First off, WOW!!!
Next would be about the tumble. I don't know much about it so I'll ask. Is that a big bubble near the surface at the "CO" rdial and would it be more susceptable to breaking through?

My buddy lives out of town and just dug it. I have not personally seen it, but it sounds like this week's dig will be over by his place(weather permitting). I will take a look at it, that is if he will let me. LOL.
I don't know if that is a bubble or play on light.
I will let you guys know know how it looks.

Dave,

It would cost you next to nothing to list it on my site for sale. You put up your pictures, description, and price. If you sell it for $10,000... you get $10,000! No commission. I am getting over 100,000 hits per month, and over 3000 unique visitors per month! ...All bottle collectors! The cost can be as low as $15/month, and this simply helps cover my costs for operating the website. Your table can hold up to 25 items at any given time. The website is www.bottleshow.com . My name is Mike. I thought it may be a good alternative for you. My apologies for the advertising pitch.

Killer Bottle. In one of Digger's Books it states The great cure for consumption and bronchitis.Advertised in the Druggist Circular in 1860 indicates that the bottles are of dark green glass. Manderson & Co. were located on 53 S. Third Street  above Chestnut, Philadelphia.

Hey all,
I am new to the forum. I guess I am the lucky bass turd that dug the Forest Pine Tar Cordial. I have read your posts and appreciate all your congrats and advice. I am going to part with this bottle, just haven't decided how yet.I have e-mailed one of the major cure collectors, but so far have had no response. The bottle is in excellent condition. There is a bubble under the CO in cordial, thin skined, but not open. My personal opinion is that it does not need to be tumbled. I guess if I had to rate it I would give it a 9+  If anyone knows of other cure collectors please let me know.
   Good luck digging!
    Steve
