Does anyone know what the abbreviations found on many milk bottles mean? They seem to be especially common on slugplate bottles from smaller dairies. I have bottles with C.C.S.-E., C.C.S.-W., C.C.S.-C and I think a few other variations. I'm guessing its some sort of state or federal registration. Does anyone know what these letters stand for?

Yeah, I've got a lot of milk bottles, probably around 150. Not really my first choice of bottles, but they are still to be found in dumps and for a dollar or two at yard sales and there is a seemingly endless number of small dairy bottles around here. No one knows what the letters stand for....I'm guessing this must be something only used in Ohio.

I don't know if this is correct, but I was told C.C.S. stands for Cleveland Cold Storage.  The milk bottles I see from here in Cleveland all have C.C.S embossed on them, as well as many other Ohio cities as shown on your bottles.

No idea what the following letters W. or E. or C. stand for.  Maybe W=West and E=East as someone suggested, and maybe the C is for Canton, Ohio.  There was a Cleveland Cold Storage located in Canton as well as Cleveland.

Just some weak guessing here.  Someone's got to know the answer.

Rick

Now that's an interesting idea. I've never heard of Cleveland Cold Storage, but it makes sense. Still not sure what the last letter stands for, as most of my bottles are from east of Cleveland and have various last letters. I had always thought that the small dairies bottled their own milk from their own farm, but if this is right, it would indicate that instead they were just milk distributers with their own bottles, just like the big dairies like Akron Pure Milk, Belle Vernon, etc, and they maybe got daily shipments of bottled milk to distribute to customers.

Hello, I believe the C.C.S. stands for Cuyahoga County Sanitation, then I believe the additional letters are a designation for individual Glass Milk Bottle makers/plant sites, with the "E" being for Essex Glass and the "W" being for Winslow Glass etc.....I believe this whole lettering thing relates to similar WEIGHTS & MEASURES LAWS in Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, Minnesota, Pennsylvania......I believe if you investigate Ohio milk bottles further you will find bottles with similar but slightly different lettering from the TOLEDO area....Hope this sheds some light on this.....AL
