miniature round bottom pill bottle - 1/27/2008 8:21:18 PM    epgorge Posts: 2422 Joined: 12/29/2006 Status: offline I have seen these many times before but not with the label. So I thought I would share it with you. I collect miniature bottles and this I thought was from the WW2 era. It was made by Merc & Co New York and the label says it is a saccharin tablet under the U.S. Patents of Dr. Fahlberg. U.S. and Canada patented. It has a ground top and is dates (patent) June 2 '85/ Sept 15 '85/ Dec 1 '85/ Apr. 25, '93. Canada patent of July 6 '85. Interesting. I would have thought it was older than the 1980-90's. I would have thought this bottle was from the early 1930-40's as it has a tin lid. The patents must have been from the 1800's for Dr. Fahlbeg's me _____________________________ Post #: 1

It's kicking my tail right now but there is light at the end of the tunnel. I am pretty lethargic these days. I picked up a signed version of RB#9 and also got the RB 10. Boy what a quest, going through all the old tops and patents and etc.... I try to read a little each day. Along with the signed RB9 they threw in a collecting fruit jars ($2 price tag on the cover) by R. Burris. Nice little book. I also got Shroeders so I will be busy for a while. Good to hear from you. His wife is the curator of the Welsh Slate Museum in Granville, NY. Very pleasant lady. Dave told me more about the Carpenters Grip syrup. The one I bought was one of 8 in an original packaged sales box. Each came with stamps, go-with testimonials, ect. labeled, contents and still corked. Each one was different. He told me the owners wanted $800 for the entire box. They purchased one box of medicine for $100 and let the other seven go. I wish I had been offered that. I asked him what bottles they were? What labels? What dates did he switch bottles and labels. He didn't know. What a missed opportunity to document. I would love to dig the old store. Joel http://www.elmhurst.edu/~chm/vchembook/549saccharin.html Saccharin was discovered in 1879 by Constantine Fahlberg, while working in the laboratory of Ira Remsen, quite by accident as were most other sweeteners. While working in the lab, he spilled a chemical on his hand. Later while eating dinner, Fahlberg noticed a more sweetness in the bread he was eating. He traced the sweetness back to the chemical, later named saccharin, by tasting various residues on his hands and clothes (unsanitary conditions) and finally chemicals in the lab (not a safe lab practice). _____________________________ (in reply to epgorge) Post #: 8

John, Check out the Middletown V 13 from Tuckers book. Wow... A bit high...? RARE VT spring water bottle! We have all admired the beauty of a Middletown Spring water bottles, but they are a common bottle... but not this Middletown! Known by collectors as the "high arch" Middletown Springs, this one is listed in Tucker's Guide as a V-13, and listed as RARE. This bottle is a Stoddard NH blown piece, probably during the civil war era. The color is a honey orange amber, with good clarity, and nice glass texture.
