That is a good question. And the answer is no. Most American poisons have "POISON" embossed, but not all. Most English (includes Canada and Australia) bottles have "POISONOUS" and/or "NOT TO BE TAKEN" but not all. Others use certain textural characteristics to indicate that the contents are potentially fatal. i.e.: Hobnails, bumps or scallops on faces or edges..... or ridges / fluted faces. Some of the bottles out there just have these things without words...some have both, or a mixture. And then there are the nice pictorials of the Skull & Crossbones. It all depends on the bottle's designer. There were few regulations back then on what they had to be, so this brought a wide variety of designs. Later on, when paper labels became the norm and companies found it cheaper to use generic bottles with none of these characteristics, is when you find the end of this era in poison bottle history.
