sorry, also forgot to say the little red skull/cross bones r.i.p. bottle is shaped like a coffin with rivet looking "nails" on both sides. after reading some posts it is apparently important what shape a bottle is. who knew?

Welcome to the forum.  From what it sounds like, you have a Wheaton novelty bottle.  No regular poisons would have R.I.P. on it.  Sorry to say, it isn't worth anything except to those who collect these particular bottles.
I'm sure it looks like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-YELLOW-WHEATON-COFFIN-POISON-RIP-MINI-BOTTLE-/300453405470?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0

Wheaton made a whole bunch of small reproduction bottles.  They were just nick knack bottles to collect.  Didn't have any real purpose.

Some books to look into if you want to start collecting poisons would by Kuhn's workbooks (I, II) and the APBCA poison workbook . Click on the link for the APBCA on my sig.  It will lead you where you need to go.

lol..never say sorry! the value of it is beside the point. its eccentricity alone fits well within the mold of my family's history. i have hundreds of bottles to sift threw yet! most windows in both their homes were top to botom glass container of some sort.
i am looking forward to this new hobby, so thank you for the book advice. i think the bug has me bad already! i am thinking of going to an old pre civil war peanut farm i know of and have access to to dig around the out house a bit...lol
