Aleck some times people used to just toss bottles at random in the woods.I often come across areas where I only find two or three bottles sometimes one just like you.But the (main) dump may be near.I would say if you hit clay that early its not a dump. But as the old saying goes....you never know,so I would dig down to make sure,if you get clay 2 foot down chances are its not a dump.Look in the area for ashes or signs of glass, metal etc and  spot dig to see if its worth further digging. The older dumps are harder to find in the woods, there will be less glass visible. But when you find one you will know. The newer dumps will have a lot more glass and are not to hard to find.

Use a probe to see if there are layers below the clay.

There is probably nothing below the clay; ..unless it has been turned by heavy equipment. You probably found just some pieces that were randomly placed. You can get through the clay with a wedge and sledgehammer (a technic I use here in Fla.). There is a post hole digging wedge that is used to go through limestone. I purchased one at Home Depot for about $25.00. You hammer it through the clay, then pry the chunk of clay out.
