I think that's one that I would have left alone. The waves of opalization looked pretty cool. If it was embossed then yes a good tumble would be nice to help bring out the words. To each there own. It'd be cool to see the same identical bottle sitting next to that one to show as a before and after. Its a really cool shape. I'd love to dig a few of them. It looks cool tumbled as well and it looks like a nice professional job. Some are gonna love the tumbled look and some are going to be against it. I'm one of those that's stuck in the middle. Swiz

Hard to see the before but most of us have had, or seen bottles with the same sickness. some people like to keep it orig. I think it's worth more cleaned. Not a whole lot more but 20% maybe. Not many pickle collectors like 'em grimey. Nice job.

Looks good but I agree with swizzle, I would have maybe washed it out with some soap and water but nonetheless, still looks good.

I did leave out one thing
I have had this bottle for over Twenty years and it was washed as well as it could have been . I have beat myself up for years and even spent an hour at the cleaners debating to do or not to do.
I am still interested in everyones opinions

I used to be for pretty much cleaning everything but I am finding I want to leave many items as dug these days. There is definately a good argument for not cleaning bottles. For instance no one would tumble a 1st century Roman bottle (obviously an extreme case). I still find it worth cleaning bottles that have good color or whittle that cant be fully appreciated with staining/oxidation. Many bottles look fine as dug , oxidation and all. I think it needs to be decided on a per bottle basis. Just keep in mind it is an irreversible action unless you have about 150+ years to wait...

The important thing is how do you like it? What's done is done. Try it this way for 20 years or so. It could begin to grow on you and then you might want to tumble all of the bottles that you dig. I personally like the new shiny look which is the way that it looked when it was new minus the lable of course.

Hey Hunter,
I wouldn't beat yourself up about it either way. Its done now. If you feel that maybe you shouldn't have done it, chalk it up to experience and never make the same mistake again. If you like it, then there's no worries there either.

I, personally, am not a big fan of tumbling. I'd much rather see that original patena. Kind-of like I'd rather see wrinkles on Kenny Roger's face. It shows character and age. A wrinkle free Kenny looks unnatural to me - but that's just me.

I'll throw my two cents in again if you guys don't mind, but seeing a piece dug from the ground is amazing.  To think it had been laying there for 100+ years.  The only and ONLY REASON I am not a fan of tumbling is because TO ME it makes the piece look like a replica because it just looks brand new.  That is only my personal opinion though.  I do like your piece though and it has great color.  Don't worry about it too much if you don't like your decision because there are BILLIONS of bottles still in the ground that are up for grabs and doing whatever you like with them is just another factor of the American dream
