I started a new hole today in Steubenville. I'm asking whether it's a privy or trash pit because I can't find any sides. I've got a hole roughly 6'x7' by 6' deep so far and I just hit the good stuff. The odd thing is once I hit 6', I hit clay and debris mixed together. Good debris too. I found a US belt buckle I hit with my probe but it was almost shot anyhow, an early baby doll head, a cone shaped stoneware ink, a petal jar qt.,a pontiled unembossed round bottle, a mocha ware thunder mug, a decent pitcher, some shards of rockingham style pottery, a 4 piece mold round bottle.
By far the most interesting two finds were a "J.A. Hamlin & Bro/Chicago: (on front) "WIZARD OIL":( reverse) or visa versa. The other find I thought was cool is a poison marked; "PREPARED BY / PROF. E.H. CRANE / KALAMAZOO MICH" (front) EXCELSIOR / PRESERVATIVE (rear) all in block letters and at the base of the neck it is embossed 'POISON". This bottle is blown in mold also and clear.

All of this came out of a square about 1'x1'6" and at 6' down. That was the only part of the hole I had that deep. I dug the whole thing alone to boot. I think I may need a hand tomorrow though. I'll get some pics of the hole tomorrow but here are the finds I brought home with me today.

These are the whole bottles   and oh yeah I found a small porcelain Bugle that says "a present" on it. I think it was a noise maker because there appears to be some kind of cement or glue remnants on the inside and it has a hole you can blow through in it.

the bottom left bottle says"A.WATKINS.(one side) PITTSBURGH, PA(other side) any infor on the wizard oil, poison or watkins woud be apprecciated.
The poison is top center

Nice digs, Zane. The Crane poison bottle contained embalming fluid. If I remember correctly, it is a decent bottle. Nice pottery, too! ~Jim

Thanks for the info jim I couldn't find a reference to it yet on the web. Funny thing is I didn't even see the word poison until I cleaned it up. Thanks too for the compliment Madman. I'll be back at it bright and early. There seems to be atleast 4 other holes there to dig too. This one is roughly about 50-60 feet from the house and the yard goes back another 70feet, to the alley in back.

The chamber pot is always a good indication. Sounds like a wood liner.

Could you post a close up of the buckle front and back, could be from the Civil War? Even damaged these bring good prices. I've sold pieces of these in the $40-50 range.
