It's a repro Repro REPRO.  You can ask the seller if there's a seam on each side of the jar - just like all the old midgets, or does it seem to have 3 seams.   Seller says 97 on the base, but I'm sure it's 971.    My bet is it's a 1971 repro.  $60-$80 in Redbook.  I'm pretty sure I have one in my stash that I'd sell for $50 without a lid.  Don't get suckered in with that glowing description.  -Tammy

here is the reply from seller. the "good" friend must use a time machine!!

HELLO,
THIS JAR IS HARD TO GET GOOD PICS BECAUSE OF COLOR. SO ALL I CAN SAY IS THE JAR IS IN MINT CONDITION ON BOTTOM & TOP OF LIP IS ALL HAND GROUND & ALSO IN GREAT CONDITION. ALL I AM GOING OFF OF AS REFERENCE IS MY GOOD FRIEND HAS A SET OF THESE JARS HE HAS HAD SINCE THE EARLY 1950'S THAT HE ALSO DUG IN DUMP. HE HAS BOOK THAT CLEARLY STATES THAT THERE WAS MILK GLASS JARS MADE IN THE 1860-1880'S AS WAS THE OTHER MASON 1858 JARS. ALSO THERE WAS SOME 1858 MASONS REPRODUCED IN THE 1970'S. MY FRIEND MILT HAS A BOTTLE REFERENCE BOOK FROM WHICH I GAVE REFERENCE TO MINE FROM. I WILL TRY TO GET THE BOOK NAME FROM HIM TO GET INFO BACK TO U IF CAN BEFORE AUCTION ENDS. THANKS,
CAREY IN OHIO

Latest reply to question. I advised them that it was a repo, no response yet. You would think someone who deals in antiques would have a clue!

HELLO,
IT DOES HAVE THE NUMBER 97 ON BOTTOM NOT 971. THERE IS THREE SEAMS.
THANKS FOR QUESTIONS,
CJ

It's one of the "Dream Color" reproductions that came out in the early '70's. If it was as rare as the seller says, why only ask $169.00 for it?? $60-80 jar.

the only clear pic the seller had was looking down on the mouth/top.
Redbook #9 lists it at $30-50...

....ended with no bids.
Wonder if he'll relist with better pix and "updated" description?
