This weekend was spent on the North shore of Onedia Lake at the site of an old homestead that dates back to the 1820s, not much left, a caved in fieldstone cellar, two wells and remnants of a barn foundation. Bottles so far have all been broken, blackglass, pontiled bases, ect., but this stone turned up in the bottom of cellar. Its almost perfectly round, 9" diameter and about 1 1/2" thick. The hole is sort of squared and looks to have rope grooves worn into it.

Maybe an anchor of sorts? Not sure the type of stone but it is layerd, could have been thicker at one time, doesn't seem the type for a grinding wheel or mill stone.

Hey Al,

That is a great find. Would that it could talk, eh...

I've got a similar sized one that I believe was discarded when it became too small.

Mine, I believe is limestone.

In looking around a little, yours might be what was called oilstone.

I'm imagining that when yours got out of round, it's use as a sharpening stone was greatly diminished, and it was repurposed as an ______.

There's a good article on the history of Grindstone City, Michigan, that you may find interesting.

I think they were grinding stone wheels for a bench tredle grinder, meant to sharpen sythe blades and mower cutters  I have one in a bench and one on the ground that my daughter wants.  I am not sure about the first one because the hole is off center..  RED Matthews

Did you use a metal detector at the property? could be worth the effort.

Grindstone city is located over in the thumb area. As you drive the roads there you can see pcs along the roadways (which many people pick uo for souveniers. interesting area over there.

looks like an old grinding stone that someone re-purposed by making the hole bigger. Sometimes people used them as gate closer weights. The anchor idea makes sense too.

I love it  Grinding stones sell well for yard and porch decorations.  I would think yours would be pretty popular for that.  It has a nice look.

Those grind stones make great yard decorations, i've got a number of them around here. Lots of them were made in Ohio, especially in Berea, which had fine grained sandstone which was good for grind stones. I have one with an off center hole too, not sure how that came to be.
