UPDATE #2: I think I found exactly how this canteen looked when it was made: http://www.etsy.com/listing/66091746/cello-metal-water-bottle-with-stopper?ref=sr_gallery_7&ga_includes%5B0%5D=tags&ga_search_query=antique+water+bottle&ga_search_type=all&ga_facet= Now I just need to clean it a bit and it'll be as good as new... You rang, Ilya? I'd look to the metal finishing / polishing people in your area, if I wanted to go that route. Do you have the top? You might consider posting over @ The Rusty Bunch, as well. To my mind, a hot water bottle is not a canteen. The patina would suggest copper or brass content to me. It looks pretty far gone from thel focus of your photos. What's the whole thing look like? Sorry I had to back track. From the various ones I've seen for sale @ electronic auction, they're not terribly valuable in pretty good condition. STAMPED "GUARANTEED FIVE YEARS / SANITARY HOT WATER BOTTLE / CELLO / A.S.CAMPBELL CO. / BOSTON / TRADEMARK PAT. NOV 26 1912" Back in the day, these had a number of uses; warming the bed clothes, stomach ache alleviation, muscle aches, cold feet, etc. Unless Uncle Cello was stashing some of his bathtub gin, I don't believe a drinking vessel was high on the list of uses. Here's a Cello advertising sheet @ auction, that goes over it's construction, uses, and strong points.
