OK, so I decided to clean up this canteen (http://www.antique-bottles.net/forum/anything-interesting-in-this-collection%3F/m-462400/tm.htm) a bit more to try to figure out what it is. Right in the middle on one side saw a logo mostly covered by iron rust dust that got glues to the canteen. Cleaned as much as I could with a small knife and here's what I got:

So two questions:
1. Does anyone recognize the logo? On the top all I could read was "EED FIVE YEARS" but pretty much nothing else. Maybe the last letter inside the circle is an O or a C.
2. Can you recommend a way of gently cleaning off the rest of the iron rust to try to read the rest of the logo?

A couple of extra photos here (http://s941.photobucket.com/albums/ad252/ilyaz73/Canteen%20logo/) but they are not much better.

Thanks!

UPDATE: I gave this to my son and he could decipher more. The word in the middle must be "CELLO". I think it's a canteen similar to this (at least the logo is similar): http://www.ebay.com/itm/ANTIQUE-CELLO-HOT-WATER-BOTTLE-1912-/320784441931?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ab03e224b#ht_500wt_1413

I still would like to know how to clean it up to try reading off the rest.

Thanks.!

UPDATE #2: I think I found exactly how this canteen looked when it was made: http://www.etsy.com/listing/66091746/cello-metal-water-bottle-with-stopper?ref=sr_gallery_7&ga_includes%5B0%5D=tags&ga_search_query=antique+water+bottle&ga_search_type=all&ga_facet=

Now I just need to clean it a bit and it'll be as good as new...

Seriously, though, is there some type of solution where I can immerse the bottle to remove most of the rust without completely dissolving the remaining brass?

Glass bead sandblasting works great on rusty metal things.

You rang, Ilya?

I'd look to the metal finishing / polishing people in your area, if I wanted to go that route. Do you have the top? You might consider posting over @ The Rusty Bunch, as well.

To my mind, a hot water bottle is not a canteen. The patina would suggest copper or brass content to me. It looks pretty far gone from thel focus of your photos. What's the whole thing look like?

Sorry I had to back track.

From the various ones I've seen for sale @ electronic auction, they're not terribly valuable in pretty good condition.

STAMPED "GUARANTEED FIVE YEARS / SANITARY HOT WATER BOTTLE / CELLO / A.S.CAMPBELL CO. / BOSTON / TRADEMARK PAT. NOV 26 1912"

Back in the day, these had a number of uses; warming the bed clothes, stomach ache alleviation, muscle aches, cold feet, etc. Unless Uncle Cello was stashing some of his bathtub gin, I don't believe a drinking vessel was high on the list of uses.

Here's a Cello advertising sheet @ auction, that goes over it's construction, uses, and strong points.

Thanks Leon. I did a quick search for "Oxalic Acid" and found a few products, e.g. this:

http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=19462&utm_source=amazon&utm_medium=ad&utm_campaign=amazon

Are there different types of OA products and do I need to pick the right one? Or any -- like this one -- will do?

Barkeepers Friend & ZUD contain Oxalic Acid. I use the strong concentrated crystaline form but hard to get & highly toxic.  Try using ZUD, Add water to it & make a thick paste out of it. Add the thick paste to rusted area & let sit a few hours. Good Luck. LEON.
