Plastics have been around for a long time. Dupont worked on plastics at the turn of the century and Goodyear Rubber Company worked on plastics in the early 20's. However, Plastics, as we know it, were not widely used until after WW II, because in the 30's there was only a handful of types on plastics, and many forms were brittle and not always consistant. They had barely began with the R & D to provide us with the plastics of today. Plastic back than was called synthetic rubber or polymor. Durning WW II, we developed many new forms of plastics. Most were the results of war needs and domestic needs brought on by the war. Though the plastic lid was developed in the 30's, it was not used widely. Probably because there was only a few type of plastics and they did not have the structure, strength or stability needed to close and seal a jar or bottle. Also I was told that there was no FDA approval on plastic packaging until the mid/late 40's. (Most lids would have been used to close food and beverage products). So we did not really see them until after the war. That is when packaging companies began experimenting more with plastic.
